I've never bought a ticket to play the $30,000,000 lotteries because I don't like to be guaranteed a losing ticket for 50 years.

However I do spend a few hundred bucks playing a lottery that supports a local children's hospital. They have 4,505 prizes totaling about $2.8 million with 67,500 tickets sold.

So your chances of winning "something" are 1 in 15.

For a 6 tickets and $600, your chances of winning "something" increases quite a bit.

There's a million dollar home, 20 cars & boats and a dozen trips and a few t.v.'s and everything else is probably under $600.00.

So your chances of hitting a "jackpot" are still fairly low but when you compare this lotto to the national ones, I can see the draw.

I've bought several tickets in the last couple of years and won a few home stereos, cordless phones and coffee makers each year.

So what lotteries make sense to you?

Statistically, none do. Statistically, gambling makes zero sense...but people still love to play.

I like scratch and wins and play the mega millions game a few times a month. It helps to keep my goals alive and dream big. Nothing more though...I don't expect to ever win - statistically speaking - but for a few bucks a week it gives me a small adrenaline rush.

I spend $2 a week buying the Lotto 6/49.........and me and the wife buy one of the local hospital's $100 tickets every year.........I'm still poorer than when I started out.

Lotteries are a tax on people who can't do math...

That said, if you spend a few bucks now and then on a lottery, it can be justified as an "entertainment expense" just as movie ticket would be. If you get enjoyment out of playing, and the amount you spend is trivial, then I have no problem with people who play the lottery in that way. Just because it doesn't appeal to me doesn't mean I have to condemn people who have fun playing responsibly.

The people who bug me are the ones who clog the courts with frivolous lawsuits trying to "win" a fortune on some lame excuse. I will refrain from giving specific examples because that's not what this topic is about....

    +1

As a lottery player, and scratch and win lottery player at that, am annoyed by those that buy fifty scratch and wins and then stand in the convenient store for hours on end and keep going up to the counter clogging up the line in a revolving door type fashion.

I buy one every now and then but I have to be out of state to do it. The Christians here in Alabama won't allow it here (the same Christians that steal tax payer's money in the local and state gov)

i played the powerball when it hit 300 mil, i put a buck in, figuring that i'd be enjoying my 299,999,999.00 profit, but unfortunately it didn't work out. i used to play scratchers, but stopped that, i never spent more then a few bucks, it was entertainment for me. i do, however, will play those scratchers that charities put on at sporting events where you can win a jersey off the back of a player.

I don't play scratch offs at all but I have gotten very lucky with the lower tier games(6/50 and 5/39)...Hit $2,000 once and a few hundred(+/-)several times but been very close to hitting the jackpot many times...I totally ignore the powerball and megamillions games because of the astronomical odds, you are more likely to get struck by lightening daily in the exact same spot for 7 days before winning megamillions....If you gamble smart you can improve your odds at winning, theoretically and statistically you are not suppose to but in reality it helps.

I play Powerball purely as a sport, just as you describe...

And as far as lawsuits go, people sue over ANYTHING to get money, lottery, and everything else.
I'd say very VERY few sue 'the lottery' to win - you just hear about it because it's (stupid) news.... just like the press covers Brittney and Lindsey and Paris..

I find that I'm very lucky when it comes to the African and Spanish lottery. I've won numerous amounts of times without even entering.

I buy a ticket now & then but it not an addiction.

Funny true story, I got a call from FarmerDave last year to help remove an abandoned Chevy Lumina from a rental property. The tenants defaulted on their rent & left the wrecked beater in the back yard. While inspecting the car we noticed a couple of hundred scratch-off cards & lotto tickets, you got to love some peoples priorities.

Every once in a while I purchase a Megamillions or Powerball ticket if the jackpot goes above 100 Million.
