my daughters macbook pro died. $500 to repair. its a 2015 model. apple store said to buy a new one $1200. my daughter is a graphic information technology student at ASU. what would be a good laptop to carry her thru college and beyond as far as ram etc is concerned? are micrososft products an option? tia
Macbook Air with M1, spec'd with 16 GB Ram. That should be future proof for at least 3 years. The only caveat is that Apple is expected to announce a new Macbook Ari with the M2 chip in the next month or so. So, if you want the latest greatest model that just had a refresh, then consider the Macbook Pro with M1 Pro chip 14" which comes standard wit 16 GB Ram, it's a bit of overkill for what your daughter may need, but it will be future proof for at least 5-6 years, although it may be about 200 more than the Macbook Air M1 with 16GB ram.
You can, but not through Apple. You would have to go aftermarket to upgrade / switch out the SSD drive, and potentially void any OEM warranty (either standard or Apple Care) left on the machine. If you really need more storage space, you could just plug in an external drive, like these sold through the Apple site (but not made by Apple).
