I'm quite concerned about originality when working on my cars, but how far can one go about "improving" an older car?

Take for instance Italian cars from the early 70's, I've seen at several occasions, polystyrene sheets, approx 10 mm, 5/16" thick, being glued to the floor board. Is it accepted to install bitumen sheets, (which are better), or should one find the correct polystyren, which, by the way, I've found new.

The cars in question are all strictly unrestored.

For what purpose are you restoring ? Concours or driving or resale for example

The example is Ferrari's definition for Classiche of exactly as it left the factory - many F40s have uprated brakes to facilitate road use but this is incompatible with Classiche

The people at Classiche are essentially hypocrites. If they change something, it is OK. If you make the same change, it is not OK.

In the end, if you can't see the change, it will generally be accepted everywhere except by Classiche. For example, many of the old cars have been converted to modern electronic ignition housed within the original components (distributors, etc.). No one seems to mind if it isn't obvious...even FCA judges.

But even 'important' changes will be overlooked if they were done by someone famous in period. For example, the famous (late 50s - early 60s) 250 Spyder - the one-off with the strange door once owned by Peter Collins (F1 driver) that was converted to disc brakes in England. No one seems to have a problem with that mod.

This is truly a loaded question with no one real answer as it really varies on the perspective from person to person. To make a fairly safe generalization, changes that are not visible and cannot be detected without dis-assembly are considered acceptable upgrades. Of course there are as many examples as exceptions to this statement but it captures the basic essence of what id accepted by those wanting to maintain originality.
