I will be replacing the front main oil seal on my QV and I just want your thoughts on which of these oil seal is better, one with the rubber coating outside or the one without bare metal? I would think the one with the rubber coating as to have the extra sealing material but I'm not sure or does it not matter? Image Unavailable, Please Login

FWIW The metal seal appears to have a directional rib. The rib will “throw “ oil back towards the inside....

Always make sure the rib is correct. Supplier sent an incorrect direction rib one time... that would be a bad thing...just saying...

I use them on the cam seals also

Wayne are you saying without the rib the oil can or will leak out?

    Ok.

    I'm dumb.

    Which is which?

My car has the seals on the left with a tiny circular slinky-like spring in them.

Mark both seals are the same size, the difference the one on the right is rubber coated all around and doesn’t have the Raines or ribs on the ID.

No. Both are good. But if the rib direction is not correct it will leak. Ribs are directional based on shaft rotation.

Ok thanks again Wayne! Actually I decided not to use neither one because I found a Viton directional oil seal at GT Car Parts and this seems to be the correct seal for the car but thanks for the knowledge.

Are the ribs in the pic above in the OPS post in the correct orientation for our cars?

The pictures shows the correct seal direction. The crank shaft rotates CW. The cams rotate CCW so the seal direction for cams would be the other direction. Some directional seals have an arrow for shaft rotation.

if the pictured seal had a shaft rotation of CCW it would push oil out of the cavity.

    Ok.

So now you really cleared it up.

For some reason, I thought that pic was of the CAM SEALS which rotate CCW.

Duh. NOW I REALLY 'GET IT.' o_O

    THANX, Again. (BIGGLY).
