I am buying a used F360 Spyder F1 and am considering doing my own oil changes as an economy measure.

Which oil should I use if I do my own oil changes? I grew up working on muscle cars, so I am at home working on cars, and think that Ferrari dealers charge way too much for oil changes. A couple people I met on cruises said they cahnge their own oil, so I figured I would give it a try. Thanks.

I always change my own oil on the ferrari. I use Mobile 1 tri-synthetic. I think it's 5W-30 if I recall correctly. Redline is good also; I believe the local ferrari shop in town has been using redline lately, but I could be mistaken. Unless you are using your car on the track, any good synthetic oil should be fine.

From what i've heard about it, if you ask, it's too much... :)

btw: it sounds funny to me that someone that can afford a 360 modena would want to change their own oil for budgetary reasons... but then again, if I were in a position where I could afford one, maybe I would do the same....

I seem to recall having read some article in R&T or C&D or one of those where they mentioned some of the costs to maintain an Enzo... one of the costs mentioned was for the Helix oil... I think it was just north of $100 US/quart...

thanks for the link -- that is pretty helpful. I was definitely a high number, though -- not just an additional $10/liter over the "normal" synthetic.

They made a big deal of it in the article... I'll have to see if I can find it somehow....

The article was talking about how they drove some guy's Enzo at VIR, and the guy had to pay like $12k for a brake job on the car... and that the oil change was over $1200 or something... is this familiar to anyone? IIRC, the Enzo was one that was tracked a lot and driven hard frequently....

I found a reference to the article i was talking about at: http://auto.howstuffworks.com/enzo4.htm

Here's what the link above said:
The money doesn't stop flowing once the Enzo is in your garage, either. According to a 2003 Car and Driver article, replacing the brake pads costs $6,000, and the carbon-ceramic brake rotors go for $24,000. A special oil must be used (or else Ferrari will consider the warranty void) -- the oil costs $60 a quart.

Aaron, that was Bob Rapp's Fly Yellow Enzo. He drove it all the time, to the beach, to the track, gave a ton of rides, a real gem of a man and a great Ferrari enthusiast.

I believe FNA through the local dealership cut him some slack on the CMM brake pad and rotor replacement. I also understand that the engine was exchanged by FNA after valve spring pieces were found at the regular oil service interval, as a precaution...

Mobil 1 Synthetic is a very good oil. I was going to use it in the 348 when I do the major service soon. But I may try Redline engine oil instead, as im very happy with the Redline gearbox oil in the 348. :)

The dealer I am buying it from (not a Ferrari dealer) says they use Shell Synthetic and their price is $16.00 USD/qt. I have heard that an oil change at a Ferrari dealer will cost you $70.00 USD/qt. I don't know if that is true, but if it is, then I figure for a small amount of time and effort, I save $54.00 USD/qt, which is close to the cost of a tank of gas. I'd rather spend the extra dollars on gas than on motor oil since gas=fun. I currently have a 2006 Lotus Exige, a 2006 S350, a 2004 H2, and a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee, so I am able to afford it. I like to fiddle around with cars and I don't normally pay people to do jobs I can do myself unless it is a job I do not wish to do. :)

If you ask how much, you cannot afford it is about as bogus as it gets. How many people don't ask how much something costs if they do not already know?

I know on the V12 engines, they had to remove the motor to change the oil, so oil changes were quite costly - $600.00 USD I heard. I saw a 1990 Testa Rossa at a local Lotus dealer for $65K with 18K miles on it. That comes to $2/mile/per oil change. Somebody may be able to buy the car, but not the maintenance.

I appreciate the different answers I have received and thank all of you.

Be warned that a lot of "synthetic" oils are not "true synthetics", but are just a highly refined dino oil.

The story goes back to court case where Mobil sued Catrol for calling "Syntec" which is just highly refined dino oil a "synthetic". Judge ruled that the word "synthetc" is a marketing description, not a chemical makeup. Catrol won. After that court case all the oil manufactures started puting out "sythetic" oils that are actually just highly refined dino oil.

    Do your homework.

The only "true synthetic" oils that I know of are Redline, Amsoil, and Royal Purple. Mobil 1 might be, but not positive. I'm sure there's a few others, but not that I have done my homework on and are sure about.

There's a specific Shell Helix for a 360, look in the engine bay or in the handbook for details, it costs more than ordinary Shell Helix synth

Whoever told you that you need to drop a V12 to change the oil obviously doesnt have a clue and shouldnt be allowed anywhere near any sort of motor!

Be careful there, though, it may not be the same oil... be sure with the dealer you're talking to that it's the Shell Helix type, not just the regular synthetic... I've seen Shell synthetic at regular parts stores and even Sears and the like.... I don't think I've ever seen Helix on the shelves anywhere...

Me, too... I kinda feel like I "have" to do the easy stuff on my cars, and the stuff that requires special tools or engine hoists can be left to the professionals... ;)

If you're talking about when I said "If you have to ask, you can't afford it," that was a joke... but also a well known saying... I don't agree with it because I know that even if I won a huge lottery, I would still ask price, and I would still haggle on cost...

    According the O.W.Manual,
For normal driving use: Helix Ultra 5W-40.
But for Hot Climate conditions and for Racing type of driving on tracks.
    use: Helix Ultra Racing 10W-60.
Over here in Europe for sale by your F-dealer or you can order it by any Shell tankstation.
