Yeah it's funny how some ask complete strangers on a forum what they should buy. I mean surely first step would be to drive the two - and the second, man up and be brave, make a decision on your own!! It surely can't be that hard? Or maybe it is?
Easy for me as I love top down driving- so it’s the 488 Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat.com mobile app
Hedged position- bought both. Very different cars and each a blast to drive. Our 675LT is still my fave - a car that you wear.
jcl50 - Curious if you have enough responses yet from the two identical threads you have running in the F12 and 488 sections? Your answer awaits behind the wheel of both cars. Most people don't cross-shop the production mid-engine with the V12 categories - at least not after they've driven them both. Short of that I would assume 488 owners are mid-engine buyers and F12/812 owners are V12 buyers. Common theme will be as suggested - drive both for yourself with a mix of why ask someone else what you should buy. Interested in what you post after driving both. I bet the 488.
Yes I prefer the drive of 488 (smaller car and nimbleness) but like the sound of V12 and prestige. The main reason I hesitate is that the F12 is already discounted and in the same price range as 488. If 812SF (not discounted) and 488 , I definitely choose 488 without hesitation. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat.com mobile app
If the car is to be kept forever as you intend then the cost would be irrelevant. Buy what car speaks to you.
Actually one may switch from one to the other. I mostly owned 12-cylinder Ferrari (starting with a 400GT, then testarossa, 550, 575 and 599), with only a short ownership of a 348 tb while I had the 400 (just to have a sportier car at that time) - but the 348 tb was replaced with no regret by the testarossa. When I was looking for a 599 replacement, my first idea was a used F12; but it was 2014 - 2015 when the prices of used Ferrari were not as interesting as before. So I decided for a new 488 GTB (my first and only new Ferrari); many people apparently despise a turbocharged engine but for me it was a good solution to the most obvious shortcoming of the previous Ferrari V8 - the lack of mi-range rev torque (which, to be fair, may mainly come from the fact that the Ferrari V8 always had significantly less capacity than the V12). The V12 still has an unmatched nobility, but it comes with a weight penalty (which also mainly comes from its larger capacity in Ferrari case) that's frustrating for track use. Since it's more and more impossible to enjoy the performance of such cars elsewhere (because of driving restrictions of all kinds), the balance tends to go towards the V8. With the current state of the technology, the V12 is not bringing anything in terms of performance - what I would like (even though it's completely unlikely to happen) is a low capacity, turbocharged V12... for me it would be the best of both worlds.
Just over 1 year ago, when faced with this scenario, I chose an F12. Six month special later, I broke down and added a Performante to my garage. I feel like I now have the best of both worlds: a super GT with a front mid-engine V12 and a raw track weapon rear mid-engine V10.
F12 is a GT (Grand Touring car). 488 Spider is a top down sports car. If you take long road trips the GT is more comfortable. If you take shorter trips jus for the fun of it, the 488 Spider would not disappoint. It just really depends on YOUR driving lifestyle. Ciao.
I traded an F12 for the 488 Spider. Seems more nimble and I think it is more fun to drive. That's all I care about. Can't go wrong with either.
I've owned both and echo this statement. Also, the f12 sound is unbelievable but you need space to open it up. If i was doing long drives and wanted something more comfortable, I'd choose f12, if I was going to drive around town and wanted a convertible, I'd pick the 488 spider.
Image Unavailable, Please Login I have driven my 458 Spider on a 3500 mile road trip through the US Southeast, and was completely comfortably throughout (Daytona-style electric seats). My F12 is quite exhilarating, and frightening, ripping up local back roads...and driving on Daytona (see what I did there ). Just sayin' There is very little on this planet Earth that compares to the ownership of a Ferrari V12.
Since you already have rear engine Carrera, then you should get F12 with front engine and the sound of V12 is glorious.
488; I often drive the F12 of my friend and own a 488 GTB - I would never switch to an F12; I even would not say that the sound is that much worse (its not that high pitch – agreed). all other aspects speak for the 488 - in my opinion... Sent from my iPad using FerrariChat.com mobile app
