My opinion is that unless you are truly a fanatic 911 kind of guy, you should not get into the 911/930/964/993 cars... Let's face it, for everyday use they are not very practical... The AC is poor... An there is little comfort... For the weekend experience YES.
But for a daily driver and for someone who is not used to the quirkiness of the old aircooled 911s, it can get tiring soon...
(P.S. I own a 993 and from '97-'04 I used it as daily driver... Nowadays it is a weekend fun car... Too tiring for me everyday)

    Texas!

I get that. However, I will have an unusual commute. Two or three times a week, I will drive 25 miles or so from the country to an edge city (no mo city driving for me). Almost all the drive will be on two-lane roads.

Why not get an old carrera. I have 2 from 1985 and one from 1989 now. I use them on a daily basis as long as there is no salt on the road. When my 928 will be ready, i will use her as well on a daily basis. So there is plenty aof cars to share miles. The only car i would not use is the 930. It is quiet annoying that you can use the power but using it means almost certain a ticket.

Which makes me wonder why you want a Porsche. Have you driven a 993?

There are a lot of other cars I would rather have in the same price range. An Aston Martin. A 456. A Maserati. And so on.

I'm not trying to be argumentative. But the appeal of old air cooled Porsches just doesn't carry over to the newer cars.

    1. It's my understanding good 993's are north of $60k, which is a lot for a 20+ year old car.
    2. The Aston Martin and a 456 are too big.
    3. A Maser is tempting. I used to own a 2004 Spyder. Loved it. But kinda hard to find a stick, even harder to find someone to work on it in the sticks. :)

I think you can get a perfectly good 993 for under your budget and as much as I'd also vote for a 993, as a fellow Texan and 993tt owner, there's no way you'll be satisfied with the a/c.

    You mean a 1973.5 911T, I think.... there was no T in 74.

I also had a 73.5T targa... yes, it leaked.

I think it depends on what you plan to do to it after you buy it. I personally (even though we have a 2017 718 Cayman S PDK that I bought for my girlfriend) would never buy a PDK car, but if you plan to leave it stock my vote would be a Cayman S gearshift car (you can get a very nice one if you look around). If you plan to have fun than 2004 turbo (make it RWD I had two I did that with), then you can really have fun. After 41 Porsches I think I may be done, the new cars just do not appeal to me any more, and I have my 9997S that I am constantly making changes to so I have my Porsche fix handled.

I agree !! The 993 is fantastic but forget about the AC !! The 993 is suitable for cold climates... When I lived in Boston it was great !! But in Texas, you will not be satisfied with the AC

Memory is not the first thing that goes. I would have kept the car... if it had A/C.

997 Carrera S. The 996 Turbo would be my second choice but i just cant get over how awful that interior is both in looks and in quality. Plus the Turbos never sound as nice as the N/A.

I just sold a white 2007 GT3 and it was amazing .... The sounds over 4500 RPM were an immediate “ grin maker “.

    get the '09 997S

Anything later ... they've raised the window sills and lowered the roof line. not as cool...the view and drivers position in the car...the 991's have been changed (and not for the better)

Cayman....too small for us old guys

and yes...there was more wrong with the '05 thru '08 997.1's than just the IMS bearing (they fixed those for the most part on .1's). The cylinder heads had design flaws for the water cooling. Resulting in cracked cylinder walls. My engine was replaced at 3500 miles. There's more than one 997.1 floatin' around that's had multiple engine swaps.

Turbo anything is too fast for the street....and the police

that second picture isn't what you want in an "S". You want the one with the clock on the dash board. Without the clock....you have no "sport" mode button. That button...makes the car...a different (much more fun) car. It remaps the fuel system for quicker throttle response....and gives you 355 hp (if I recall correctly)

    pretty as it is :)

The dealer can retrofit the Sport+ software, but you won't have the clock. IIRC it was about $1500.

996TT or a later 997 C2S. Either powerful AWD or lighter, RWD.

I personally would get the 09 997 S, slightly newer, my hunch is less maintenance. But I like turbos too.
