Sorry... I know this will have been done a thousand times before, and I have done a search, but i seem to get all sorts coming up and as I have limited time access to F.Chat, i thought i would short cut and ask anyway.

348 Spider - I want it to sound as close to an F1 as I can, i.e high pitched, similar to Ricks 355 in the N.West.

Problem - I have been told categorically by my new insurers, Liverpool & Victoria, that ANYTHING that increases the car's bhp (like de-catting!) is NOT covered, no way, absolutely not.

What exhaust system can i get that gives a loud hi-pitched howl still with cats intact?

Or where else can I go for the insurance?

Do Tubi offer a system that sounds good with cats? Does anyone else, without spending much over £1500.

To be honest, I'm pretty peed off with L&V - if i can get an extra 20bhp just by taking the cats off, then it's probably worth paying a couple of hundred more on the premium elsewhere (must be unlimited mileage).

Sorry if I've bored you, but any opinions gratefully received.

    ta!

I'm no expert, but from what I've seen and more importantly heard, a Tubi is the only way to fly!

I think it would be worth spending the extra and going for the best there is.

Looks like the LV consistencies are rearing their ugly head again. They told me that they don't care about mods as long as I don't start altering the main body of the engine.

Loads of others have tubi cars through with no problems

If you want a real F1 style scream then the Capristo will do that for you. Higher pitched than a Tubi. They run quite hot though so test pipes are recommended to avoid destroying the cats

Not sure if they do them for the 348 though

I can't understand L&V telling you they don't insure cars w/tubis. They do.It's all very well them being the keenest on price but they also need to offer consistant advice to their customers about what their policy actually is. I'll phone again tomm and try and get something in writing.

Firstly, congratulations Al! Secondly, you can fit a Tubi without having to take the cats off. You will be told it's gay, but you can do it. I've always kept my cats on.

On the L&V front, I've always told them I have a sports exhaust fitted (because I always do) and I can't recall them asking me about BHP. Tesco did on my 911, and I told them there was no increase in BHP. This is because:
    1) I've not seen any hard evidence that they do increase BHP
    2) If I've had a smash bad enough to make a claim, I'd like to see someone prove it. In fact I'd like to see them start the engine.

If L&V are getting too anal, there are a bunch of others you could try- search on 'insurance'.

Thanks guys - i think i'll have another go at L&V - and talk to someone senior. If they realise that they are getting a fair bit of negative comment on the internet they may be a bit more accomodating.

I'm now being told that taking the cats off makes practically no power difference at all!

All these great sounding exhausts - are we talking cats on or off?

er... sorry for being dim... what are "test pipes"? Do you need these when you take the cats off? Or can you simply put a piece of s/steel tubing in?

Test pipes are the straight through tubes that you replace the cats with.

Wondered how long before you asked about exhausts Al!!

Again am so happy for you getting the 348, will have to get some pics of yours and mine together.......and a can of fly spray the size of a fire extinguisher to keep the bugs away from the paint work.

I believe the way to get the loudest sound is to fit a TUBI challenge exhaust with test pipes, or something like that...am no expert. Though be wary that very loud exhausts can make long motorway drives hard work, and upset neighbours early in the morning.

Steve... you are joking arent you... the QV exhaust that you mentioned sounds absolutely sh*te!! I heard it the other day on a 348, I wouldnt have that fitted on my car if someone gave it to me for free, its horrible.
The bottom line is.... Tubis ARE THE BEST ALL round exhaust systems that money can buy, its the ONE and ONLY exhaust to have fiited on a Rarri, nothing else comes close with the same/similar price tag.

    Al,

Both mine and Simon's 355's are setup with the same system ie Tubi'd no cats and they sound so different from each other so I don't know whether you can judge one system vs another when the same systems give very different (but beautiful) noises. When I got the Tubi fitted if I didn't like it they would convert it back to the original for no cost - you can't lose. I'd also go for the performance air filters too. Mine felt so much quicker after fitting it. Tubi's are virtually all fitted at Verdi's and is a very easy place to get to (ie West of London)

    As steve F said....

I had a 348 GTS with FUCHS Sports Exhaust which to me sounded more F1 then TUBI does on the 348 engine. The F1 sound was like a TUBI on the 355.

I tried to take the FUCHS exhaust off at the time but but Maranello would not let my when I was getting paid out. I offered to Buy it... No go....

The car was smashed up at the front, but I would rev the engine to listen to the noise. Hi pitched but no much rumble low down.

I bought the 348 spider with the TUBI on with Cats on. The car sounded nice but much louder and better with CATS off.

If the 348 spider had not had a TUBI on I would of gone for another FUCH exhaust on the 348 at the time.

Like Ric355 has said each car has its own unique sound. I know that Andyhis has a 348 with a TUBI and no cats and sounds louder then mine, but has the same note.

I guess they are all slightly different due to the engines being hand built by Ferrari.

Maybe the FUCHs on another 348 model would sound different to the one I had...

I have heard a Bell exhaust on a 348 in Germany and that sounds very good, like the TUBI.

I've been looking at the BMC air filters. I'm not bothered about extra power but I'm hopeful they'll increase the induction roar a bit.

Are these the filters you used and did they improve the sound?

    Graham,

I'm not sure what the make of them are - they were fitted by Verdi's when they did the Tubi. I don't notice much more of an induction roar to be truthful. Someone on here has the Gruppe Air Induction system fitted - I wonder what that sounds like ?

I think you can get K&N filters for them - ever considered them ?

I would definitely consider K & N but wasn't sure who supplied them. The K & N website just points you to some motorbike sites

Good News... LiverpoolVictoria will now insure me with a performance exhaust on :D

Now just need to figure out which one as I really don't want to spend £2k or get into importing one.

oooh, air filters? That sounds interesting... is it a fairly common upgrade? I did it years ago to a carb'd Jag, and it did give it a nice induction whoosh :) I used K&Ns as they looked nice with the chrome ends.

Right, so far it is Fuchs v Tubi and by the sounds of it the fuchs is the higher pitched. The Capristo system will be waaay too much cash for me I'm afraid... so will a new Tubi probably :(

Please feel free to keep the opinions coming.
