does the Ferrari 308 transaxle have hypoid gears ?

I am researching what gear oil to upgrade to, and the redline MTL is recommended by some F Chatters, but Redline web site says MTL is not for use with hypoid gears.

Also, there are threads that discuss which types of Redline trans oils to use, but there are 3 or 4 different types of 75/90 Redline. which one/combo is best ?

There is no hypoid gear because the crankshaft is inline with the driveshafts so there is no bevel gear at all in the diff. A hypoid is a type of bevel gear.

You can use MTL but most use 75W90 NS . If you want you can mix that & buy 4 bottles of 75W90NS & one of 75W90 - the latter has the friction modfiers in it for LSDs because (in theory) you can get diff chatter with the 75W90NS with heavy throttle in tight bends - but its pretty unlikely.

I've tried both the MTL and the 75W90NS & preferred the latter. It just feels better. I do mix it 4:1 with a bottle of 75W90

If you havn't changed the gear oil before then the easiest way to fill it is through the transfer gear case - but when you do that it takes quite a while before it finds its way through to the gearbox, so be patient - stick 4.5 quarts in it and then leave it for 10-15 minutes.

    Cannot get Redline here.

I use Royal Purple. Still have the 2nd gear issue that some claim the use of Redline has fixed, but so what?

Warm the darn car up first.

I have been using MTL for years. Big improvement in shifting quality on my car.

Thats the mixture I used. It enables 2nd gear easily when cold but I am getting diff chatter on tight bends even with moderate throttle, so I guess I need to add some friction modifier.

I use Amsoil severe gear 75w-90 synthetic. Since I changed to this I have no 2nd gear issues. The transmission shifted fine when I bought the 328 (although I do let it warm up) and I changed to this when I serviced the car.
I have used this on several customer 308/328 and there were improvments...
I suppose it's a matter of choice or what is available to you.

I've never gotten rid of 2nd gear problems with redline. I used Valvoline once and it was the best for that problem. Next time I change I'm going back to Valvoline.

I just changed over to Redline lightweight shockproof after reding some good reviews of it and I give it an A++. No 2nd gear issues at low temp, smooth shifting, reduced gear noise, no grinding and just all around great stuff.

    http://www.redlineoil.com/product.aspx?pid=43&pcid=8

Film thickness greater than an SAE 75W140, yet low fluid friction like 80W gear oil or 30W motor oil
Excellent low-temp flow, improved cold shifting
For racing differentials under moderate loads
Popular in racing transmissions like Hewland and other Road Racing dog-ring boxes, Bert and Brinn for Stock Cars, G-Force, and Liberty clutchless for Drag Racing

Unique lubricant with solid microscopic particles offers low drag/high protection
Relatively low viscosity, yet cushions gear teeth under extreme pressure
Helps to prevent tooth breakage, resists throw-off
Avoid use with pumps, coolers, and filters as unique medium and affinity for metal can cause clogging
Designed for wet sump transmissions and differentials with splash lubrication

Red Line 75W90 GL5. If second hesitates I go to third until second is warmed up to where it wants to be, then it goes right in. No biggie.

    On my 328 I use a 50/50 mix of RedLine 75w90 and 75w90NS
No problems with 2nd from cold.
I first used NS only and I had diff chatter on tight corners, throttle or not.
    Works great!

I've used Mobil 1 75W-90 LS for several years with no difficulties in my 328. No problem going to second gear while cold.

You guys don't understand second gear cold. Try shoving your car into second when its 40 degrees out with any brand of oil sometime.

    Friends,

I cant find the post I was looking for but this will do. I am using the Redline 75/90NS for about 5 or six changes. I am noticing very easy shifting when cold but a little hesitant when hot. I am curious for those of you who have used the other Redline GB oils have you used the 75/90NS also and can you compare?

I was also wondering I never had this problem before but I always put a bit extra in. I would plug the rear plug at the first sign of oil. After I had the leaking from the shaft and resealed the shafts this tarted. I was told by a tech that many had 5th gear problems as their oil got to low. I was just wondering if the extra oil may have helped the shift. Once again NO 2nd gear problems mainly 5th is a bit sticky, but will shift smoothly at high rpms.

    Thanks,

    Rob

I have had the Redline 75/90NS and 75/90 4:1 mix in there for about a year. I get perfect shifting into all gears when cold but slightly hesitant into second when hot.

    Andy,

    Thanks for the reply.

I think part of my problem is the weather here. It never gets very hot. Just drove inland a bit where it was 95° and the car shifted like butter! Also the temps got to the middle on both gauges!!

How is your second gear when cold?

I was speaking to someone the other day at a club meet who ditched the fancy synthetics and went with old-fashioned oil (I think it was Castrol) and gets perfect shifts at all temps. The gear oil debate could go on for ever I suppose. :)
