I currently have a basic Droid with Verizon. I'm eligible to upgrade. I'd like to get suggestions about which smartphone to go with? I'm no opposed to the new Iphone but I'm thinking that I should get a 4G phone (which the Iphone is not). I use my phone for heavy email, web browsing, phone etc. Not too much into the multi media (music etc).
    Thanks

Wait a couple of weeks. Verizon will be getting two new monster phones:

    Samsung Galaxy Nexus

    and

    Motorola Droid Razr

These two phones are the absolute cream of the crop of Android for Verizon. the Galaxy will ship with the newest Android OS, called "Ice Cream Sandwich" out of the box. The Razr will come with gingerbread, but will get Ice Cream Sandwich very quickly.

I'm a sales rep for Verizon. The Nexus should be a beast. Right now people like the Bionic but like I said I'd hold out and see what those two new ones got before I jumped in.

My Girlfriend and I have only had our Droid Xs for a bit over a year now. Great phones. However, she is very seriously considering upgrading to the new Nexus.

Luckily we live in Gainesville, Fl, a city that has VZN 4G so she can really take advantage of it.

I love how quick 4g is, but it drains the battery so fast that i disabled it.

That's one thing that's so frustrating. Its almost 2012 and the batteries are so dismal.

The best androids to buy are either the new Moto Razr or the upcoming Samsung Nexus S: http://www.samsung.com/us/mobile/cell-phones/SPH-D720ZKASPR

The Razr is slimmer and sleaker looking... the Nexus raises the bar for specs on any phone.

The Samsung Galaxy S II is also a killer phone.

Those are the only ones that I'm jealous of (as a iPhone 4S user). :)

I have the commando. It's supposedly waterproof and that's all i really care about. I've busted two phones due to water damage. No it's not the fastest nor is it the biggest screen but it's the most durable.

Like the GZ one apps with the compass and stargazer and pedometer etc.

if you can hold on the nexus will be quite impressive (although that new facial recognition feature has already been successfully hacked with a simple photo)

the razr is a great phone for those who are hard on phones with gorilla glass, some waterproofing and the kevlar. Very nice.

I have owned a galaxy by samsung for 7 months now and love it and imagine the s2 is just as nice. Very few tech calls on it.

I have the droid X and really not a big fan. My wife says I am just old fashioned.

I don't need gizmos on the phone, I need great email and texting. The mail program on the X makes it tough to edit longer emails, which I find VERY frustrating. I almost miss my old Blackbery with the roller ball. Made it much easier to get around in the email.

Lately it has been freezing up and restarting it self a lot.

I have been thinking about ditching it and getting something new. I will take a look at the Samsung.

I am not a fan of MS phones, but have been hearing good things about the latest one. Any feedback?

Went to ck out the Galaxy Nexus today and walked out wanting (but not buying) an iPhone 4S. Looked briefly at the Razor too; the laptop add-on was pretty cool.

Why iPhone? Size, price, & battery life.

Size...smaller thus simply fits easier in a pocket than the Nexus or the Razor.

Price...iPhone is $100 cheaper but the sales rep did mention that the iPhone could ultimately be more expensive to own depending if I bought a lot of apps.

Battery life...rep said that none of the new phones have the battery life I'm use to with my BB b/c the large screens eat up the juice. However, the iPhone's battery life is a bit longer b/c of the smaller screen plus there is a $99 case that also serves as a battery that doubles the life IIRC.

Thus effectively for the same cost of the Nexus or the Razor ($299 each) I can get the iPhone ($199) with a case and extended battery life ($99). Oh, let's not forget Siri!

I've pretty much committed myself to Google products (gmail, calendar, docs, etc) so I really thought the Nexus (or another Android) would be the phone for me. However, I understand that there are apps that allow Google products to run on an iPhone.

One negative is that the iPhone isn't in stock. The rep said the wait varies but one ordered yesterday (15th) doesn't arrive until ~ 22nd!

I'm not into music, gaming, or much social networking (FB, twitter, etc) and the apps I'd use would likely be along the lines of productivity/business. I do foresee surfing the net quite a bit and doing the FChat thing.

So all that said, do you agree with me and the sales rep that the iPhone is the right one for me of the 3 mentioned above? Is there a 4th (or 5th) that I should consider?

SIZE is what really puts me off of the new androids. Why are they building phones that are verging on the size of small tablets is beyond me... I have a tablet for that (or a computer)!

Any thoughts on when they'll come down on price to say $100 to $150 range?

Is there a good rule of thumb for when "new" phones start being discounted x weeks or months after intro?

Once you go iPhone, you never go back. Can't say the same in regards to Droid products. Capable phones no doubt, but I generally don't see the same level of satisfaction coming from that direction.

How's the battery life with yours? Mine seems at least as good as the previous. However, my wife upgraded her 1st gen Droid to the Bionic (Razr too big) and it only lasts about 8 hours with occasional use (gps, bluetooth, wi-fi, etc turned off). So she's looking for an alternative.

That's just crazy to me. Despite all the reviews I read/skim I never picked on the fact that battery life sucks so bad on the new phones.

This is a big negative for me especially for a phone that is $300 considering I usually buy the < $20 older gen phones when I "upgrade".

OP you might want to go to the store and hold a new Android phone. Unless you have NBA hands they are absolutely ridiculously sized and certainly not pocket friendly. iPhone 4S (or 5) is looking good everyday. iPhone is just about perfect for my average size guy hands and you still get a very high resolution screen high quality screen. Android appeals to my geeky nature, but even I feel the user interface is cluttered compared to iOS. I've also seen my cousin's Galaxy crash a few times. Siri seems like it will make the user experience much smoother too.

I'm not in either camp, still using an old Nokia.
