Greetings all, I'm planning to have the engine out of my 308 QV soon. I was wondering if I've missed anything that I could more easily do with the engine out? I'm more concerned about my time than the cost, so I want to get everything I possibly can done in one big project instead of dragging it out any further. My goal is to make my semi-neglected low-mileage engine as close to "new" as possible. Here's my lists: Already done: SRI fuel lines fuel pump fuel filter accumulator clutch adjustment CV joints / transmission seals brake lines To do: head gasket valve cover gaskets shift shaft seals oil pan gaskets distributor gaskets cam seals timing belts & tensioners check valves AC system upgrade SRI coolant hoses fuel vent hoses & return line plastic fuel lines fuel injectors spark plugs clean engine & bay rebuild rear calipers Other: fuel injection components : clean / rebuild? water pump maintenance / rebuild / upgrade? oil pan baffle?
My qv motor is out for a valve job and about the only thing I'm doing that's not on your list is new motor mounts.
Thanks for the replies so far! Are the mounts more of a wear item or a time item? I'm fairly sure they're the original mounts, so they've been there for 30 years... but the mileage is quite low. If it's in my best interest to do it now I'll certainly look into it. I'm planning to replace them as part of the upgrade (I believe they come with the new kit anyway), I don't want to take any chances.
Hows the exhaust look on the back bank? Its almost impossible to pull the back header with the motor in.
Good suggestion, I will take a close look at the back header while I'm in there. The exhaust seems fine to me right now but worth giving a good inspection.
Have a good root around the engine bay, while the motor is out of the way. Check the fuel cross-over pipe for wear points, anything else (e.g. air scoops) for rub spots, and replace the fuel fill pipe. Give the suspension bushings a shake, while you're there. Now's the time to replace any rubber or consumable component in the bay, to make the machine mechanically "like new".
Will do, thanks. Oh believe me, I knew it a while ago! I finally have a little free time to myself coming up... so just trying to finish the bulk of it over the next couple months (after a couple years of piddling around). I left a lot of stuff not related to the engine bay off of the "already done" list.
