Well, it's time to fix some oil leaks on my '85 QV, plus a 100,000km service - simple, huh? Nope. BTW, this is my first post, so apologies if there are technical errors. I'm not sure how many pics I can post, but I'll start with a few "before". There are lots more, but the decision was quickly made to pull the engine to do a proper job. Of course, amongst the many things to do, removing the yucky, rattly exhaust cladding was one of the first. The last two shots are when the pipes came back from the ceramic coaters - a little nicer, I think. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Once the exhaust comes off, you naturally take a peek up the ports and... So now the heads have to come off! Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
nahh, looks normal and within the spec for oil loss. Do you think? I should take a pic of my man-cave - it looks like the Exxon Valdize sank in the floor
I thought oil burners were all the rage? how far into the rebuild have you gotten? manifolds look great btw.
Heads are away for a re-furb - only the exhaust valve guides were shot, everything else just a clean up. The PO really let this car slide - I knocked $ off to buy it, but should have been $++ - I've been carrying out a rolling resto for 3 yrs (commencing with removing the mice!), but I couldn't put this part off any longer, and of course needed professional help. Every PO up until the last one looked after it well - just my luck!
A few cosmetic items to attend to: I think the shots are out of order, but beyond my abilities to change - you get the picture (pardon the pun) No, I don't have a 355. Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
I had the belts changed when I bought it, but staring down the bores, I see this - possibly a technical error in the past! At least the bores look great. Image Unavailable, Please Login
When the Ferrari stops leaking oil, It Is Out of Oil. (Don't forget that any oil leak will migrate or blow upward, because that is how the air flows through the engine compartment, from bottom to top, out through the louvered vents!!!). Of course, when the car stops all of that nice synthetic oil will dribble down. +2 on the ceramic coated headers, Awsome, wish I could do that. chris
I know - my other car is a Lotus. The main culprit was the oil cooler hose fitting under the filter, but it was pissing out everywhere. At least I think I've solved the hot idle problem - oil in the dizzy too.
So - this is normal for a Ferrari, right? Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Short of drilling a hole in the bloody thing, I don't see how it could leak any more... BTW, this was AFTER degreasing Image Unavailable, Please Login
Oh sure, just install the 'wobbly bearing' option next time and put the Exxon Valdez to shame or you could always go with another favorite, road kill bingo! was it a rock or a squirrel ? but in truth the most common would be the "overtorqus maximus" you know when that last 1/8th turn just won't do so lets crank 'round once more and listen for the 'tink'! now it's torqued down. colds med sare woorking goood today.....'nother shot barkeep.
Well, after the usual Ferrari delays (apparently they used a special pulley bearing for late QVs and early 328s, and then went back to the old ones!), it's beginning to pull itself together. Red cam covers are a styling choice (me and the Group B QVs) - just a trial fit Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login Image Unavailable, Please Login
Wow, looks great! I too had some "while you're in there" work related to oil leaks. It's good to get those done. Looking forward to seeing the final result. -F
Looks sweet. It is so cool to watch these engines come together so clean. My engine looked like an oil spill gone bad as well. Even leaked coolant between the tranny and block. I termed it Ferrari Ebola as the pictures came back of my engine insanguinating on the shop floor.
Thanks for your comments, guys! A few more pics. I know the belt covers are very red, but once installed should be OK. Besides, I like them. BTW, is there meant to be a little horsey in the centre of the oil filler cap?
