Strange occurrance... in an '89 Mondial t - I have a strange whine sound (almost as a quiet version of an alternator belt slipping when wet squeal) from the engine. It only happens when the motor is at good running temperature, and I have given it some stick. Eg. if I'm on a clear road, going pedal to the metal up to 100 mph, then stopping at the next traffic light, then when it goes down to idle it starts with the whine... Not metallic or anything to suggest anythign scary. To add to the strangeness, if I switch the engine off, then immediately restart it, the whine goes away. If I drive along normally, it does not come back, but if I rip it on then it does come back. Everytime thoug, switching the engine off and back on seems to be the "reset"...

I did take the cam-belt covers off, and the belt looks OK - no bald patches, all looking normal. The belt service was done in Sept '06, and the car has driven 14K mi since (though 3K miles I did in 72 hours driving to Denmark, Paris and Milan all in one trip in a pan-European race with 2 Porsches and an Aston Martin - all youger than 4 years - and I won by being more disciplined, resting less and driving faster when the other's didn't dare - at night)

It really has me stumped. Not clutch related (same sound in-out, in neutral and in gear) - none of the accessory belts are slipping to my knowledge - alternator works tip-top (voltage & amp measurement), AC works fine, PAS works fine and exactly the same weather or not there is any whine.

Sounds like it may be one of the bearings in the front of the motor ....... belt tensioner bearing, alternator bearing...... ???

Why would the whine reset as soon as the negine is switched on/off? and only appear after hard driving?

I would try to reset the alternator belt tension/tensioner ....... my 355 had a bad alternator belt tensioner bearing and the intermittent sounds coming from it varied from squeeling to whirrrring ........ sometimes depending on heat ...... of course it is just a suggestion ......... your actual noise source could possibly even be your neighbors cat stuck in there ....... ;)

I'd take off the alt-belt and go for a drive. Rule out the easiest first.

Er............if he took of the alternator belt he would only get as far as the battery would allow, which isn't far.

I'm guessing the "whining" could be from your a/c compressor? I could be on the way out, even though is till works? Or maybe it's running low on oil/freeon? Have you tried to listen where the whine is coming from with a mechanics stethoscope?

FBB - I can't see why the noise only comes after high revving at heat (>7000 rpm where we should always be at ;-), still there at idle, then if I switch the engine off and on (immediate sequence is enough) it goes away and everything is normal.
    All the belts are fine...

    Cat lovers...

As for the cats, my neighbor's cat used to make a habit to go and sit under the muffler to get warm. Since I installed my home made magnaflow based hyperflow (200 CEL metallic) cat, he did this only once. My neighbor tried to sue me for animal cruelty when his can lost all its fur on its back. Needless to say he stays away from the car and has the prettiest peach fuzz on his back - I call him razorback the skunk. I told him my cat did it to his cat and he thought I had a homosexual cat that had his way with his. To which I only replied there is no gay cat here, only a nasty ***** - you could just imagine how the conversation went, but the punchline was always "The aristocats!!!"

Other cats do come by, I usually use their tails to clean the inside of the pipes - all plastic brushes do melt...

I just had a similar problem with my wifes Yukon. I know this is surely a very differant vehicle but the answer surprised me. It turns out the cause for the noise was pulley misalignment. They had to put a laser on it to see/adjust it. Perhaps something similar has occured on your 348 caused by the infamous alternator bracket fracture?

Probably not, but its another idea anyway.

You'd only need less than a minute of running (down the street and back) to rule it out. Then do the same with the a/c.... Just a thought.
