what do you think about this whining noise, i dont think it is the transmission gears, more like a bearing, idler wheel?,timing belt tensioner bearing?

Sounds to me like a belt and or bearing. I would get a stethoscope and listen around on the passenger side to locate the source.
If timing belts and bearings had been replaced in the last 7 years I would doubt a cam belt bearing.

Stethescope. I wouldn't be driving it around until it is figured out.

Whoever installed the spark plug wires put the distributor boots on upside down.

We have seen brand new tensioner bearings make noise. Age simply is not a factor.

then it must be bad quality bearings, a new bearing should be quiet.

The only failure I've had is the little double A/C belt tensioner bearing. They are real small bearings stacked side by side with a spacer between them and I recall a very similar chirp-like squeak before they went..

"There's no warning lights on" -- well, of course, as there are virtually no warning lights ;)

It's been stripped of every last piece of emission equipment, and I'd bet the slow down lights don't work...

Waterpump belt has not shimmed correctly
    Good to catch this now
Take the small key pen laser and set it in the groove of the pulley then rotate to see aligned with next pulley

To me, it sounds like the belt is riding on the side

And just how is shimming going to fix that? There is no shimming. There is no place to shim it. WTF do you mean shimmed correctly?

By the way. Just to be clear. Anyone guessing at this noise is just guessing and it isn't productive.

Glassman with the stethoscope idea was really the only one showing a path forward.

    Automotive stethoscopes are really cheap.

Why not remove all the belts. Start engine. If the noise is gone, it's one of the belts or its tensioner. Put a belt on and re-tension. Restart engine and listen, etc, etc.

I would not remove the timing belts for this test.

    HI
I just want to say that I am far an expert on what could be wrong with your car. I live
in Nova Scotia Canada and have own my 308 for over 16 years.
Yesterday I decided to take it for its last drive of the year, it was -7 C but the roads
were still clean of salt ( not today). snow flurries were forecast,
I have discovered that a 308 can make a lot of scary noise until it warms up.
It took 10 minutes just to get the temps to start coming off the pegs.

I am just sending this thread because I envy you and your temps. I hope that your problem
is not to serious. My car is now in storage in a heated garage, I just lit a wood fire to heat the house.

Any of you folks that live in the northern US know what I am talking about ( that's about not aboot).

    Good luck on your car:)
    Mark
