Just started a few days ago. Sounds like a turbo spool up. Is this the dreaded cracked manifold header? I should add, i can only hear it when i accelerate in 1st and 2nd, but torque seems to be a bit down in 3rd...

I've heard that in my car since I bought it a few months ago...

Don't think it would be the headers since both of mine had been replaced within the last 2 years.

Could it be the air pump? I've seen a couple of threads mentioning whining noise and the air pump. If it is, do i need to replace it?

I had a constantly pitched whistle at idle and a varying pitched whistle with varying RPMs and it turned out to be a failing bearing.

It could be a bearing for the alternator belt, the air conditioning belt, or the timing belt. Luckily for me, it wasn't the timing belt bearing -- otherwise I would have had to take engine out of the car to replace the bearing. It turned out to be the alternator bearing...

    Otherwise maybe an air leak?

I have a similar whistling noise on my 348 only under acceleration at around 3500 - 5500 rpm's. I think it has something to do with the vacuum advance that helps equalize some pressure in the intake plenium. Some others can give you more technical answer but try a search in this forum. It was about 2 months ago that this was discussed.

Changed some of the small vacuum tubing and no change though. It does not seem to affect performance.

Ive seen the same sound coming from a VERY small air leak in teh intake manifold gasket. The headers would give you a horrible exhaust leak sound. Try hooking it up to the SD tester and see if it picks anythin gup. If that doesnt work then spray soapy water around the engine bay and hunt for bubbles. But you wont find the solution to this over the internet, go to your local tech.
