It has been very hot here in Florida, and after either a routine or hard drive there is a high pitched whistling noise coming from the engine compartment. It sounds like a tea kettle. I put my head in there but I cannot tell whether it is coming from the front or rear of the engine. My coolant tank is at the recommended level (according to the owners manual), the gauge is reading well in the safe temperature range, and the front fans are working. I assume it is either a leak or a relief valve. The sound goes away after a few minutes. Any ideas on what may be the cause or location of the sound, and any suggestions for a repair? Thanks.

On many cars with a holey insert inside the exhaust tips, it will whistle at certain rpms, requiring persuasive bending to quiet them.

On U.S. model 2Vi cars, there is a vacuum operated valve that opens and closes a larger diameter vacuum line going to the plenum (part of the cold high idle system). On my GTBi, that vacuum operated valve developed a leak in the pivot point, so I had this tea kettle like whistle that came and went. It's on the right side of the engine, near the top, at maybe 2 o'clock (going from memory) if you're standing behind the car looking forward.
