I've just picked up a used stock muffler to replace my anti-socially load one I have on the car (it came with it - not sure of the make).

Anyway, the stock tips I have seems fine and the valves appear functional, but there's white powder coming out of the outer stainless steel wrap on the muffler box. What's inside a stock exhaust ? I presume a simple box which is then wrapped in some kind of heat material then the whole lot has the outer stainless wrapper with the "no touch" hand stamped in it.

I guess the heat layer is disintegrating so is this a big deal and is it common ? What are the implications if I fit this silencer as I really want a stock sound - I have my reasons.

    thanks

Mine was in that condition when I changed it out recently. It was literally "coming apart at the seams" albeit slowly over time.

It is common. The only negative effects that I noticed was that the engine bay would get covered in a fine white dust after a week or two - no biggie but it didn't look too good and meant I had to wash the engine bay down regularly with the inherent risk of getting water into places where water shouldn't be.

There's a fair bit involved in fitting the stock exhaust back on and I'd question the value of doing it for a tired old standard box but as you say, you have your reasons and I respect that.

Come to think of it you could have my one! I left for work one day and there was the 1.25 ton skip bag all filled and ready for collection, came home that evening and there was the same skip bag with half the contents gone, including obviously the old box!

Thanks for the insight - yes I agree there's little point in going to the effort of changing to a stock one if it's gonna be messing up the engine bay - still the tips are ok. My reasons for changing is that I cannot afford and don't want to upset the neighbours. 360's are attention grabbing (often in the wrong way) as standard so I don't want to wind people up.

I'm taking to Nouvalari about a stock sound silencer.

I was concerned about being too noisy for the same reasons. A sponsor here on F Chat was doing a deal on Agency Power system which has valves which one can leave in auto mode or open with remote. It is a bit louder than stock at low revs but no problem with neighbours and screams very nicely at higher revs when you're on open road or track.

I did a thread which you will find under my profile if you want a bit more info.
