I was just reading Forza thinking about cars that it would be neat to get the top chopped off of - especially "affordable" V12's like the 365GTC/4, 400i and 456. I've seen pics of these before.

I figure if the conversion was $25-30k you could easily make a V12 convertible for under $100k. Heck, with 550's now under $100k, and the Barchetta in the mid $200k's, they might even be good candidates.

Then I was wondering, since Straman is supposedly out of the convertible biz, who do you go to for such work?

As far as I recall those type of conversions are around 100k a piece.
I remember the old MB CL and BMW 850

    Ryan,

Are you out of your f--ing mind? Didn't you just start a thread in silver subscribed complaining about not being able to afford an F-car because of your situation? Now you want to buy one AND foot a $25K to $30K bill to make it into a convertible???

IMHO, if you want a convertible, buy one. Don't take a perfectly good coupe and trash it. Most conversions, no matter how well they are done, are always worth less than the car you started with. It's not original, never will be original, and it will be harder to sell down the road.

In the meantime, either buy a fricken car already or stop driving yourself and all of us crazy with your mental masterbation. Either you can afford one or you can't. Get you're priorities straight, kid, then act on them. Wasting time talking about converting a car gets you nowhere. And spending your time daydreaming about a car you can't afford wastes precious time you could be putting toward making the money to be able to get one.

    Regards,
    Steve

You have the option of not reading the thread if you're going to get in a tizzy like that.

I'm trying to enjoy the last days of my vacation before law school starts up again (even still, I read a law book until 2am last night - while on vacation)... I suppose talking about Ferraris I can't afford *right now* is now off limits. Surely this thread will have a little more reference value than the thousands of "what's your favorite dish soap" or "show me your 318i's" threads.

Autoweek just covered the conversion of the Ford GT, IIRC they outsourced the engineering on a four piece stowable system for $38K, on top of the price of the car...

I don't have the vendor in front of me.......it looked top notch...fit together like a puzzle yielding targa or full open configuration. Even fully closed the wings could be popped open at the edges for ventilation. That was a nice feature....

There are no shortage of already converted 400s and C/4s, if you look hard enough. Much, much cheaper to buy one that's already converted.

Today shops may charge up to $100k for chopping a TR or a 550

Much better to get 1 already chopped, its like buying the car & getting the chop for free or very cheap

do it youself. all you need is a saws-zall and a grinder. why worry about a top just take it out on nice days. the car will be worth much less even after a pro conversion. so get your tools out and go for it. the job can be done in an afternoon. we did an old dodge once. turned out just fine.

I will take the Slutmobile owner's word on this one! A point to Janko too.

Don't worry though, I'd never put ostrich in it, even if I bought a chopped car.

Tex - I think that the $38k is a super value, but I think you're not bearing the development costs since it's not a one-off. I think the GTX is great. IIRC the firm is Genaddi.

The Slutmobile is so much fun its almost illegal :)

Exactly! Some buddies and I did one once in college, cost a few blades and a case of beer. Bingo-topless.
Also still topless when it rained..........oh well, in college that does not matter, eh?

Actually some guys at my school did that with an 80's Dodge Diplomat (or one of those monstrous Lincoln Continental look-a-likes).

If you got the money, do what you want. Look for one that is already converted, they don't hold their value.

wow to that second post!! whatever happened to dreaming? Isn't that what Ferraris are all about?!

I say, if you want to chop it, ****ING CHOP IT! Take a page out of Richard Losee's book.

Remember that buying secondhand modified cars is a risky business. Modifieds are notoriously abused cars, and a new buyer needs to take extra precaution to be sure that the original owner took as much time and consideration into overseeing the delicate construction of their aftermarket auto.

There's a thing called quality of life. If a chopped 365 is what you need to be happy, then by all means-- chop a 365. Power to you, and good luck in attaining your dream. I'm in the same spot you are, dreaming from the sidelines in between cramming my brain full of my chemistry major.

    Again, Good Luck!!

What kills me is that some European noble chops or mods their 250 SWB in 1964 and that's a revelation, but touch that $$$ car now and you'll incur the wrath of the 'purist' (a joke if there ever was one, considering early Ferraris were bastard cars with a variety of coachbuilders doing what they wanted to them).

I was reading Forza about the gorgeous 1964 GTO Series II. It was a regular GTO before being reskinned. Could you imagine how the masses would groan if you did that today?! But I love the idea. I want to be that eccentric rich dude who does whatever he wants with the car with no concern for resale, and curls toes in Monterey.

Is the GTO spyder made for the ZZ Top singer by Genaddi a real GTO or recreation?

Personally I love the look of the chopped 456 and would love a modern 4 seat convertible. But... What is going to happen in any accident is VERY uncertain. Yes they strenthen the frame to prevent sag. But there is no way to know how the car will deform in an accident. I just wouldn't feel very safe.
