    A buddy of mine snapped this pic when he landed in Destin, FL the other day. I'm usually pretty good at my aircraft spotting but this one has me stumped. Really cool looking bird, I'm curious to learn what it is. I'm sure it's a ton of fun to fly.

    That's an Avro/Huntington Jet Provost.I guess to be more accurate I should add the name Percival to the nomenclature because he started the design.

    The Jet Provost was a training aircraft that was still being used by the RAF when I was a lad in the '80s. The aircraft photographed could be a camouflaged JP, or there was an attack version made by BAC called the Strikemaster. These were never used by the RAF but were exported abroad, mostly to the Middle East. Many have been coming back to the UK as they have been retired by the original operators. The Hunter crash at Shoreham could well see them disappear from UK skies which would be a shame as the JP was such a common shape in the skies of my childhood.

    Should we start a new thread titled "best job in the world"?

    Man, what a cool operation. Talk about a great gig....legally own and operate a civilian plane with guns and bombs? And then they pay you to do it?!? Every kids dream! I'll wager that guy's average day at the office is more exciting than mine. I really enjoy when I get an afternoon coffee, he gets to enjoy an afternoon low level strafing run. :D

    It does still amaze me that the military outsources this sort of stuff to contractors. Just seems like something they'd keep in-house, but you can see how it likely makes budgetary sense to use these guys vs bringing in a few A-10's to do the same training. I would imagine though that the regulatory and security hoops the operators have to jump through are daunting.
