I noticed that it doesn't have any Pininfarina badges, a first for any modern Ferrari. No doubt the work of the in house design team, since apparently Pininfarina isn't doing too well financially (that's what I heard, just hearsay).

End of an era. I would have loved to see Pininfarina's take on this car.

I have no special knowledge only what my eyes see and I view this as taking portions of the P4/P5 design.
Then again, it is only my opinion

Does this make it the first road Ferrari to be entirely designed in house since the 250GTO?

P4/5 looks a lot better than the LaFerrari at a lot of angles and I honestly cant stand the P4/5 (no offense)...the LaFerrari rims leave a lot to be desired

Ferrari in-house designs do not come close to Pinninfarina designs.

The answer is 'the wrong group of people' unfortunately.

Look at how classically beautiful the Sergio concept from Pininfarina is.

hey Erik, i was just commenting on a different site, how the Sergio looks clean, yet it almost duplicates a student design from a few years ago ....it is definitely more with less though, agreed.

I was going to start a new thread in creative arts, to garner some strictly "design" critique discussion on, meaning more than "it's fugly" type remarks.

This seems an appropriate thread for design discussion on the new LaFerrari.

It's an interesting question to ask "who" designed this car, the answer is "many people"!

The first question really should start as "where"?

Even before the passing of Sergio Pininfarina, and it's changing in operations, Ferrari was working to build it's in house design department to handle all future models complete design development.
This takes place at the Centro Sviluppo Prodotto' (the Product Development Center), and is headed by Flavio Manzoni, Director of Design Ferrari.

I was just typing another page ....not that one specifically John, but is similar, the student design I'm thinking of is even more similar to the Sergio design. Once I get a minute here, I'll try and find the image.

The next answer has to be to "when"?

This design has been underway for many years, mostly under-wraps in-house, but many external sources are drawn upon for a design challenge of this size.

Not just for future designer development, but as an investment to draw upon, design institution student competition entries are not just forgotten about once they are presented.

This Ferrari sponsored world challenge took place in 2011, but certainly the 'LaFerrari' design began before then even. It's great to look to over these wonderful designs, and identify elements surfaced in the resulting production designs, like the new LaFerrari.

I'd have to agree here. There is definitely a lot of P4/P5 in this design...a good thing!

So many are commenting that this design lacks that "Pininfarina" influence, but really what does that mean? Pininfarina design house, is like any other, consisting of its individuals, the people that make it great. Ferrari's deisng department is the same, made up of it's individuals, and rest assured, these are people with Italian design in thier proverbial DNA.

First is this gentleman, Lorenzo Ramaciotti.
He has overseen the design of arguably very beautiful cars. The Ferrari 456GT, Maserati Quattroporte and Peugeot 406 Coupe, each during his 30-plus year career at Italian design house Pininfarina. Coaxed out of retirement in 2007 at the age of 59, he is Design Director for the Fiat Group.

Edit: His official title, is Head of Global Design Fiat/Chrysler.

    The afforementioned gentleman, Flavio Manzoni.
He is charged with creating a new brand identity for the Italian marque. He reports directly to Ferrari Managing Director Amedeo Felisa.
He studied at the University of Florence, and began work with Fiat in 1993, involved with interior/exterior design. After working with well known designer Walter De'Silva at VW design group, he was announced as Chief of Design for Ferrari, starting January 1, 2010, replacing Donato Coco.

is that still the case? i thought the recent changes had altered the Fiat core design group influence over Chrysler products a bit? though, the new Dart is Fiat based

I think the biggest failing of the Ferrari LaFerrari is precisely that it muddles the brand identity. The F40 could only have been a Ferrari. The LaFerrari is a mess of various design gimmicks that don't comprise any design language. There's nothing distinctive here, perhaps because there's no line or curve for the eye to follow very long, but more importantly because there's no rhyme or reason to it. If someone put a Pagani or Koenigsegg badge on it, I wouldn't have known it was a Ferrari.

In contrast, the Porsche 918 somehow looks like a Porsche, and it all makes sense in a very functional Porsche-like way, but at the same time it's beautiful and probably timeless.

Current CEO, and previously Vice General Manager Ferrari, Amedeo Felisa.
He studied Mechanical Engineering University Politecnico of Milan, and has been responsible for product development at Ferrari, answering to President Luca di Montezemolo.
He was involved with the concept project Millechili, a fore runner to the LaFerrari, which was the investigation of reduced mass and weight, improved packaging, and increased performance, of the (then current) Enzo supercar, toward future Ferrari & flagship models.
