I often felt very tempted to buy a 328... but couldn't stand the thought of having everyone and his neighbor come up to me saying "That's Magnum PI's Ferrari, isn't it!" (never mind that his was a 308, as most people don't know the difference).

Same for the Testarossa, which to me is cheapened by the Miami Vice connection.

I suspect I'm in a minority however, as the movie connections are often quoted as boosting the models' values.

    What do you think?

Try having your Boxer called "a 308 like Magnum's".

Ugh. All many know anything about from that basic shape IS the 308.

I never minded the Miami Vice comments, as I think Crocket and Tubbs are very cool....so is Thomas Magnum. I think when people make comparisons to the TV shows in an unflattering tone....that's what I don't like. If they are a real car nut and respectfully comment, that's great. But when they are superficial and obviously don't know anything about anything and say..."hey...it's the Magnum PI car"....that's when I just smile and keep my mouth shut.

I think the worst questions ever asked are..."is that a kit car?" Or people will see the horse emblem on the back and ask...."is that the new Mustang?"

I believe Ferrari owners have a duty to be polite no matter what, and to be a good ambassador of the marque. Always treat everyone like you would want to be treated. And if you see someone is genuinely interested...let them sit in the car or maybe even take them for a quick ride. Always be humble...because most guys can only dream of owning a Ferrari.

It's a rare day when someone comments about a 308-328 being a Magnum PI car. Considering the show ended almost 20 years ago, quite a bit of our population wasn't even BORN when the show was on. My girls, who are twenty and their friends have no idea there was a show called Magnum PI, or Miami Vice. They look at my 328's and Testarossa, shrug and go in and play computer games. They're not in awe of the cars, fact they'd like them better if they were Priuses. Even their boyfriends could care less.

As far as "most guys can only dream of owning a Ferrari" I disagree. I bought my first one in 1984 at the age of thirty. A 308 back then was just a bit more than buying a new Honda. Buying a Ferrari is easy, you just decide you want one and get it. Skip eating out, quit drinking a pack of beer a day, sacrifice a little bit and a Ferrari is as available and affordable as a LOT of new cars. Buying a NEW Ferrari however, might be a stretch for saving your beer money.

I LIKE having a 328 and a Testarossa. Two totally different cars! Except they BOTH smell great.

    Agree with this 100%

Just picked up my 360 a couple weeks ago and I've taken it out to several local events. One being an annual "Cruise Nite." It was the only "exotic" there among 100's of beautiful cars cruising the drag....

Everyone was freaking out that a Ferrari was out there. I pulled in to park and everyone came over checking out the car and asking all kinds of questions. They were amazed and stunned when I said they could sit in it if they wanted to! I have no problems showing the car because it allows them to share a little bit of the joy that I now have.

Only ones that didn't even turn a eye at it was every single Corvette owner!

I think both shows did a little boost in keeping both cars popular. Late 30's to 45 years olds still love both shows. Now these guys have some money and can buy them both. Its good for the over all market.

Magnum PI is shown twice daily on Encore channel. It did well and they have started re-airing the first season again. I've been watching these reruns. 3 and 5pm on 537 Direct TV.

Why do you even give a ****?

So you do buy the car for yourself don't you? Not other people.

For me it's because of Miami Vice that I have owned 5 Testarossas. I still keep the soundtrack in my car. When I had the 308 I was getting bombarded with Magnum comments but that's no reason for me not to enjoy the car. I loved it.

I don't remember 308s being Honda money in 1984. New 308s were well into the 60k+ back then.

i think magnum pi and a lesser extent miami vice were kind of bad for the car's identity and the ferrari brand........ they are finally starting to live that down though. when i had my 1979 308 gtb i wasn't keen on the fact it often couldn't be seen in the context of what it should have been seen, but rather through the filter of a bad american cop show.

A used 308 in 1984 was 32K, a new Honda Accord was ?? Jump forward to last year- a USED Testarossa was 65k, a NEW Volvo around 45K. Not a huge jump from a normal car to a dream car. you just have to be willing to buy a used one verses a new normal car. The Testarossa in one year has appreciated to probably 90K, the Volvo has DEPRECIATED to 35K. A Ferrari shouldn't BE a dream car, it makes more sense to buy the right used one, than almost ANY other new car. What's better than buying a car and not losing your shirt to depreciation. Of course this doesn't apply to the newer and still depreciating Ferraris.

I have a TR because I liked it when it came out. When Miami Vice put the car in the show.....I liked just as much. I don't by things because of TV. I buy what pleases me. Same for the 308. I want one not because of Magnum, but because of the gorgeous lines it has. Will own one for one reason....because I like it ......and its a Ferrari.

Ditto. I remember the first time I saw a Testarossa on the cover of Road and Track. I immediately NEEDED one. Of course, I was only 21 and still in college. I NEVER thought I would own one. Fast forward 20 years or so and there is one in the garage. I bought it when the TR was still looked down upon by many. Good for me! Even with values increasing I plan on driving mine just as much. Did TV influence me? Well I did buy a white TR... :D

Doesn't bother me, as long as the facts are straight. I've had people call my TR a magnum car. And a good friend of mine continues to tell our friends that I have the "90s" ferrari because I like 90s. It is an 80s car that spilled into the nineties. Annoying

I suspect age makes a difference. I was 10 to 18 when those shows were on and loved them both, those cars are burned in my brain no coincidence I own them both. I fell in love with a black on black TR on the cover of a magazine and was very disappointed when Miami Vice painted theirs white.

Miami Vice was my window into the Ferrari world. I lived in the sticks. Both shows helped give these cars exposure into peoples lives.

Anthony...I also scour Ebay looking for a Mcburnie! As a prop collector its a car that I can tinker on and not get upset if it gets a rock chip. Besides it will look awesome next to my white TR. I just picked up a metal replica FL License plate..........AIF OOM.

What?? The Testarossa IS MIAMI VICE! Whether one likes it or not the TR will always be associated with the show and the "greed is good" 80's. I was one of the first people on this forum that stated....I love the Testarossa because I love Miami Vice! Now, this was in the old days when the boxer girlies ruled the roost lol ;) No one would admit it back then....well how times have changed.

And, you'll laugh but what's old is new again. I was at a night club last week and there was this young guy with a jacket on.....with his sleeves rolled up! This guy was no more than 18-19 but it's interesting to see the trends repeat.

But, no worries, hardly anyone out in the public has ever made the association. The usual reaction I get is that they can't believe that the design is so old. Many people ( non Ferrari people ) think it's new car.

One of my ex gf's who is younger than my 91 TR always liked to go out in it and she was...Miami what? lol The car's design has a lot of visual presence and still captivates people's emotions.

Buy it, enjoy it and say "Freeze...Miami Vice!" under your breath if you have to....no one has to hear ;)

Oh....cool, fitting that this post is my 5000th! lol

I've been in multiple bars lately with patrons who are in their early twenties singing along to Party all the time by Eddie Murphy. One of my favorite party tunes in college. These kids probably don't even know that Eddie Murphy is singing that song or who rick james is LOL. Definitely one of those moments when you begin to feel old! But yes, what goes around comes around. 80s and early 90s can't be touched. And all of the people unloading TRs in the late 90s-early 2000s due to "the car looking dated/being too eighties" are now scratching their idiotic heads. She was never dated, yes she was and still is indicative of the era, but she is and has always been beautiful :) And it also pisses me off that I used to get made fun of for listening to eighties and wearing don johnson gear for halloween, when everyone is now embracing it! I strongly dislike trends. But what I loved about the United states pre 1994 was that the main stream media for the most part only gave respect where it was due. Something which is not so anymore. Hopefully as the economy continues to resurrect itself and time continues, society will go back to these values. Pop culture used to be wicked cool. and it has sucked for way too long.
