I know that Michelin annouced that it could not guarantee their tires were safe for racing but both catastrophic failures occured with the same team - ie -Toyota.

    Some considerations:
Could it be Toyota suspension designs or settings that accelerated the problems - some teams said they didn't have any problems?
Tire failures in F1 are not uncommon (both manufacturer have them regularly) - how often has something like this actually occured but manufacturer didn't pull out - I remember BAR having a few wild rides when running on Bridgestone?
Why do folks refer back to the Raikonen crash couple of weeks ago to make the point about tire safety and design when it really nothing to do with tire design - just team decision...

Anyway IMHO this isn't anything new - Michelin probably got spooked afer two failures in a row, saw some degradations in other tires... add the FIA letter about tire safety.. and all of a sudden they act on the side of caution...

only the Toyotas went off due to a failure, but apparently Michelin checked the other tires and found 9 more on the verge of failure

This is one of the worst PR cockups in history, so I don't think they took the decision lightly
