Interesting. I can't see Lewis and Max on the same team.

If he matures nicely, Verstappen could probably interest Mercedes in case Hamilton retires.

I don't know if Max and Lewis would co-habit without some sparks, being both strong-headed

I guess it's the relation between Wolff and Max that could be the problem.

Also, would you like Jos Verstappen hanging around in your pits all the time ? No ...

    +1 agree

I think the relation of Jos and Toto would be the problem;). I can't see Niki tolerating any of Jos's nonsense. BTW any news on Lauda?

funny enough max came very close to signing with Mercedes. The biggest reason he went to Red Bull is because they pulled out all the stops and gave him a Toro Rosso drive. Mercedes couldn't match the offer, the deal was signed and history made.

    Agree.

We all know LH would like three more WDC. But are Merc/LH jointly committed to an open-ended timeline to make this happen? If LH doesn't win this year might he consider retirement? Max and LH on the same team might be rather entertaining though.

Mercedes wanted to sign max but couldn't guarantee any F1 seat yet. Red bull could (through Toro Rosso).

Mercedes signed many Young drivers in the past, just so that other teams couldn't get hold of them.

Max was right not to sign; he may have finished in DTM, or with Marussia.

    Look at Wehrlein, or Ocon.

Career progression at Mercedes is non existent almost. They have had the luxury of the best car so didn't need the fastest drivers in there, and now lewis is top dog there he can refuse anyone he likes. Lewis doesn't want a Max alongside him and Mercedes, for now, doesn't need it to happen either...If Mercedes was 2nd fastest team then they would.

However, of all the drivers, I really would like to see Verstappen given a test in a Mercedes, just to see what he can do.
I suppose a test in a Ferrari is out of the question ...

My one problem with Verstappen in a Mercedes is he'll likely be at the very front and we won't get to see any of his overtakings any longer.

Maybe we need an F2 format really....and disable DRS for the sprint race. o_O

If he was only testing, we would only have lap times to compare.

I don't think Mercedes is much ahead anymore, but they have the knack to be often there to benefit from the others' mistakes.

I think now is the most competition they've faced since the hybrid era started. BUT, they are extremely well organized and everything runs smooth as silk...there's no panic within the team (well, only when they need to come up with an excuse when one of their drivers hasn't received what he perceives the optimum strategy, but that's a different story). So when ferrari messes up their strategy (inevitable) or have some kind of issue during the race (lets hope bahrain was a one off), Mercedes is there to grab with both hands.

lets see if Ferrari has fixed their issues and if they can remain ahead, and also Red Bull...if REd Bull's fix is done quickly lets see how Mercedes does under real pressure.

I'd like to see just the opposite happen. I'd like to see the Mercedes people - engineers and drivers - have a day with the Williams team to see if they can help them out a little. As a Mercedes customer team, the Williams debacle does not help Mercedes out one bit, and I think they owe the Williams team a little assistance to at least try to elevate them to the mid-field. Even with their help, Williams will pose no threat to Mercedes, and a better-performing Williams might actually be a benefit at times.

I don't think those at the race track would be able to help Williams a lot as the track mechanics don't make to car fast. But it would be interesting to have the engineer look over the car just to tell them where they went into the wrong direction because I doubt they will figure that out themselves

I agree. But, even if the Mercedes engineers were willing to do this, is it legal?

I doubt... But I thought Ferrari and Haas were creative about that when testing on the wind tunnel

Williams wants to keep its independent status and not be considered a Mercedes B team, so I don't know if this would be feasable.
Also, I doubt if one day would be enough to pinpoint exactly where the problem is.
Williams seems to have many issues.

Since when have Mercedes worried about what was legal....... their stance is ‘do it’, when caught, offer money, if that fails, threaten to leave unless your illegal parts are deemed ‘legal/but don’t use again just in case of challenge’, works every time. Tyre testing, random parts, iffy wheels, dodgy computer settings..... u name it, Mercedes will do it, she’s like the dirty girl at school, anything for a dare!
