Seems as if the many newspapers are crying the blues stating that since circulation is reaching record lows, many are hard pressed (haha!) to turn a profit and thus, closing their doors. Who here gets a daily? For me, I canceled a long time paper, but mainly because I do not set time aside to enjoy it.

Circulation is not the problem. Newspapers got used to earning their money from ad revenue and the main source of that revenue was automotive and real estate based advertising. Since the recession came those funds aren't coming in and thus they are hurting. The other problem is that for years newspaper companies were consolidating at outrageous prices, they all have immense debt loads. The "pain" they are in is they can't service the debt. Many papers are profitably locally but when they funnel the funds upstairs to corporate it is just not enough.

I have the fortune of working with about a half dozen newspapers, it is almost depressing to interact with anybody who works there. They're all worried about their jobs.

A newspaper should be a local resource. Another problem they have is sharing stories via the AP or other wire sources. This of course began years ago, most newspapers were at one time the local watchdogs and now they have the same content, more or less, as the next paper with a couple local stories worked in. My belief is without the local content, newspapers are doomed to failure.

I still recieve and enjoy the local paper here.

Local paper here in W. Texas is hardly worth getting unless you need to check out the classifieds or maybe get the advertising supplements. Used to be able to get the Wall Street Journal but that went away about a year ago, still can get the Sunday NYT but that is about it.

Sunday afternoon with the NYT and a good cigar is a favorite past time :)

Once, while doing some self-study on history, I read an online article about 'newspapers'. It was really quaint :)

Most papers can just be read online.

I would rather get the truth and prefer various online sources.

Just canceled the last paper a few months ago, they were piling up in the recycling bin without being read.

    On-line only.

I used to get IBD but ended up just opting for the WSJ. They (IBD) still call me all the time trying to resell it to me

Can I mail you newspapers? Hell, I'm at the post office at LEAST once a week. If that would be appreciated, please PM me with your APO and I'll pop one out this week!

    God's speed.

I get the local newspaper every day. I read it while I eat my lunch. I find reading the local news online is not convenient at all. Not to mention being able to read it in the throne room... Plus it's nice to have the paper for masking coverage while painting car parts and for putting under the cat box for those near misses.

We get the local paper and the Wall Street Journal every day, and the Christian Science Monitor (now) once a week. I usually keep up with the New York Times on a daily basis, as well.

    Peter, Appreciate the thought, really...

But between on-line and a couple of magazine subscriptions... I'm good... besides, I see most of the important news here before it ever hits the paper!

    Hope you are well. Thanks,

    Mike in Kuwait

I finally stopped my subscription around Jan. Usually most of them chucked straight into the recycle bin since I read most of my news off the web. Only kept it for the Sunday cartoons, and the Fry's ads (I'm a geek!).

Cancelling probably saved me a lot of money. I don't make my weekly pilgrimage to Mecca and spending money to save money..... :D

It also has to do with the increasing bias in many papers. It's annoyed my parents for years, but they still subscribe because it's part of their routine in the morning.

The Houston Chronicle is continuing to decrease in size.

I got a '3 months for 10 dollars' deal for the Bend Bulletin and have come to the conclusion the paper is good for lining bird cages, wrapping fish, and starting camp fires.

Local and WSJ on the driveway every morning. The local keeps getting smaller (physical dimensions and content). It would be much more useful with less purchased content (AP, etc.) and more local content.

Bump.... but hey - I used "search" and found this thread!

This was due to the $80,000 for a single page, single day thread in B&I....

I haven't subscribed to a paper in 15 years. Mrs. Jedi did the Tacoma News
Tribune for about a year after we got married in 2004, but I really never
read it. It was mostly used for coupons and to put under the kitty litter box.

Now that it's two years on from the OP, how many still have a home paper
delivered? (Hotel lobby/room papers, "weekly's while eating lunch" don't count).

    We're talking SUBSCRIBED HOME DELIVERY....

    I'm really curious...

    :)

    Jedi
