    $46k around 40k miles

the e55 looks too much like the 500e for my taste while the M5 looks a lot more aggresive

    Good Luck

E55 or M5 is really just up to two things:

    Steering feel/feedback (M5>>>E55)
    Manual or Auto trany

i had an E39 M5 for a couple years. great car. never had any problems with it. much more fun to drive than the S55 was - though the S55 had the cavernous back seats i really wanted.

it's basically the only option out there if you want a stick. i've asked Maserati twice now to offer a stick option on the QP - they simply will not.

i thought i got beat up pretty good when i sold mine, but i've been really impressed at how low the prices are now. i've considered picking one up again myself - if only it wasn't so rather useless in the snow (i drove it through one boston winter, though i didn't put snows on it (live on the edge)).

What color are you getting? I'd probably go for Oxford Green or LeMans Blue myself. I love those two, but the M5 really looks good in any color imo. Carbon Black, Imola red, and Alpine White look real sharp, too. Hopefully in a few years I can get one for a second car.

    Congrats!

I just updated my 2000 with the OE Euro Hella Clears, and replaced my fading titanium trim with a carbon fibre option.

You will love the car. I'm closing in on 100k miles. Every time I think of getting rid of it, I just can't go through with it.

I had a 2002. Unfortunatly had to get rid of it, just not enough room to haul junk around in.

I thought it was a great car! My only complaints:

It is a gas hog..ok, ok I realized that when I bought it and could've lived with it if the gas tank wasn't so damn small. I felt like I was at the gas station every day (exageration, but you get my point)

Traction control..If I forgot to turn it off, it was downright annoying. If I was pulling out into traffic or making a u-turn faster than it thought appropriate, it would actually apply the brakes!!!

Trunk space...Very small for a car that size.

Other than that, it was a joy to drive. It handled well, was very quick, and looked great. It is a car I am sure you will be happy with. 4 seater with OOMHP

My law partner got a certified used one and it had one problem after another. All was covered under the warranty, but it was a big headache. The BMW dealer was very responsive and agreed to buy it back making him a good deal on a new five series. I am sure it depends on the car, but they can get very expensive without a warranty. I don't think I would buy one without a warranty.

I have had three...an e34, an e39 that I drove for 111k miles and my current e60. They were are wonderful cars...the best three cars I have ever owned...period.I had very few problems with them as they were always as reliable as a Honda. They are as fast and handle as well as a sports car, look great and can still carry 5 in relative luxury.

Congrats! My first M5 was a '02 LeMans Blue/Silverstone interior aluminum trim, awesome color! I now have the '06 Silverstone/black M5, they are worlds apart in almost everyway.
You should got to www.m5board.com for all your M5 questions. I am rodman31 on the M5 board, the guys there are very helpful.

I would make sure that you get a warranty for the car. There are little problems that come up with the E39, MAFS, clutch and rear sway bars are 3 big ones that break often. Make sure you warm the car up first! Gears maybe a little tight when first driven in the morning. Have fun and enjoy!!!

Just wondering. . . how the hell do you break a sway bar??

Perhaps it'd be good to upgrade to a bigger one then. . . ;)

Dinan has bigger sway bars, I guess that & the exhaust will be my 1st mods

Its probably the weight & power of the car that snaps the sway bar

Its not usually the sway bar that breaks, but rather the brackets they are mounted to. They are litterally a four dollar part at the dealership and I went through them every couple of months. Symptoms are an alignment that seems off while driving, yet checks out on the machine, a nice loud clunk whenever you take a corner really hard etc.

Most have simply uprgaded to the Dinan brackets, or better yet the ones you can find on beastpower. They are over a hundred bucks, but you will never have to worry about it again.

Ohh okay that's what I was thinking. At least it's just a $4 bracket or a $100 upgrade. . . I was going to upgrade my swaybar on my Civic and found out they can tear apart the actual subframe. . .lol --sigh--

Just bought a CPO'ed '02 in March w/37k miles for $38k. Car was in great condition but just needed a couple of small items to make it perfect. We're expecting another young'n in November and needed another 4-door in the house, so the M5 was a good comprimise. I wanted an E39 rather than an E60 as I just dont care for technology for the sake of technology as BMW has seemed to have gotten out of hane in recent years.

Great cars - you cant go wrong, especially if you need a 4-door.

Nice that dark red was my 2nd choice

the only thing just slightly better than an e39 M5 is Maybe an MB CLS55 or a Maser Quattroporte. The e60 is just Fugly & that iDrive system is supposed to be overly complicated

not true. If you know how to use a mouse on the computer, you can use the iDrive. It just seems intimidating to people, but it is really easy.
