I am in the process of buying my first Ferrari and I am so excited I can hardly sleep at night. The car is in mint condition, all original, full service records, and has 41k miles. That is more miles than I was looking for, but the car is very nice, well cared for, and in the same state (florida). So I was just wondering about your take on cars with a bit more miles on them. See I plan on driving it and not keeping in velvet ropes in the garage, so I can see cranking up the mileage a lot more.

By the way thanks for all your help on here with all the questions I have had over the past months. If it weren't for this forum I would have a lot more concern about trying to own my first Ferrari.

    Thanks, tom

Jeremy has a car with close to 70k on the clock and JoTec has one with nearly similar miles on it. Both the cars look great to me. With proper care and maintenance, I don't see why these cars are not capable of 100k+ miles.

Pull the trigger and join the 'hood!

I have racked up 3900 miles in the four months I have owned my 348. She loves to be driven :)

The way these things are generally maintained, I would guess it's good for 200K miles - or more.

Just make sure you're buying the car HEAVILY discounted if you care anything about resale value. For some reason, these cars suffer a major ding in resale at 40K miles - I would estimate it at $5K. As you approach 50K miles, it will head further south.

You can trade fun for resale value. Which do you want? Why buy a car and worry about it? Drive it like ya stole it! It loves to be driven!

    Plugz,

Have you been to a mall lately? much of the day is...sorry to say....a bunch of punk kids.

So far I have had the following done to my cars....

    1) Keyed (nasty one at that)
    2) Coke poored all over it
    3) starbucks (4 Large) ice blended mocha things poored on my car, completely covered the vehicle. Evidence left at the scene :).
    4) baskeball size dent from a 70's caddy while she was trying to get out of her parking spot....btw....I was IN my car when this happened.

of the above, 2 and 3 were caught on mall surveilance and the perpetrators were caught and are not welcome in our mall any more.

I understand the cars need to be driven. Just some of us (ME) don't really have a place to drive them. Sometimes I wish I worked in an office or something!.....

Sunday at the VCR is pretty much the only place and time I have to drive the car, and I haven't even had time to attend that as of late..

Wanna borrow my car :D :D It needs some mileage put on it

45 big ones and counting (driving), it not only looks perfect it runs perfect thanks to Eugenio and Tillack's,and no way is it ever going out the door for cheap because it has over 40K on it. It's like the stock market or a recession, the more you talk about it and devalue it, the more you make it happen and become a reality. We are the market and set the tone, so those who keep harping on resale are not only shooting themselves in the foot but the rest of us too! Time after time I see rookies that have never owned a Ferrari let alone sat in one come on here with their great knowledge and history of the marque (not) and spout on what price should be paid and what standards set for a the purchase of a specific Ferrari and it's really getting old. Drive-'em damm it, they're not museum pieces......................yet!
Remember there's no such thing as a cheap Ferrari and I'm personally going to do my best to keep it that way.

I bought my 308 last June with 78k miles on it. It is a very early '76 308 that I purchased from the original owner. ONE mechanic worked on the car its entire life. I spoke with him prior to purchasing, and I still speak with him regularly. The engine still has over 170 compression in each cylinder. Car now has 79,800 miles on it. Runs like new.

348s got nikasil coated cylinders, so I don't see why they would not last a minimum of 150k miles if serviced correctly.

I would disagree, if only because these engines are designed to operate at very high revs. Whatever oil you use, revs equal wear, and I don't believe Ferrari designed its engines as much for durability as extreme performance at the time they were built.

If one of our FChat tech ages wants to correct me, I'll listen. But engines wear less cruising at 3000 rpm than screaming at 8000 rpm. Even a liberal arts major like me knows this. ;)

I see where Chris is coming from. There are tons of errands/drives I don't take my car on.

I've had two cars broken into, one at a mall (BMW), the other in my office parking deck (Jeep GC). I've also had people park so close to me I had to use the Dukes of Hazzard entry technique to get into my vehicle.

For as much as it costs to service and buy these cars, it's not worth the grief to waste them at the airport, mall, etc.

Bullfighter, I respectfully disagree. A lot of this misinformation stems from the Ferrari community fixation with low miles. Just my personal observations for your review.
    1. The majority of a motors wear occurs at start up when the engine is cold. Same for a Chevy or Ferrari.
    2. How often is a street driven Ferrari at 8k RPM? Maybe I don’t drive my 348 hard enough but it is a very low percentage of overall use.
    3. I have seen and driven several 308’s with well over 100k miles. They drove and performed well. A good friend with a Platinum winning Euro 328 with over 145k miles that will outperform any US 328 I have ever seen or driven. Motor never touched other than normal maintenance. All well maintained Ferraris.
    4. My own 348 spider with 51k miles. Leak down and compression numbers would indicate an extremely healthy motor. Performance on the level of a 10k 348. Again well maintained.
These are very robust power trains if taken care of. That is what I generally hear from the generous techs that take the time to educate amateurs like me.
By the way, your 328 is amazing in black!

Mine has 51k miles! I drive it almost every day. I live in the high desert where the weather is almost perfect year round and there are lots of wide open spaces and roads.

The only problems I have had in the last two years/17,000 miles are; alternator replaced, right rear wheel bearings replaced, and the flywheel repacked.

Plus, I got a new shop because of this car also! "Honey, for the price of a major service, I can build a shop in the back yard AND install a two post lift. What do you think?" :)

That's a very good question. Forza magazine says the 348 engine is bulletproof, but I don't exactly know what that means.

Are there any documented cases of engines requiring a teardown due to age and mileage? (for reasons other than overheating or belt failure)

Does anyone out there have a 348 with > 100,000 miles?

Everyone seems to agree......The 348 is a steal of a deal.

So I have to ask THE question yet AGAIN (kinda tired of asking it :) )
    Why are 348' so cheap!?!?!?
We have NOBODY TO BLAME BUT OURSELVES!

I've got 34,000 miles on mine and the only issues I've had are with the cooling system and handling. Both currently being replaced.

Same thing was told to me by a leading Ferrari specialist based in the UK.

Probably due to a lot of mis-information being thrown around.

A few of us are begining to think that values will soon start to creep up. We already have a 348 magazine, the most comprehensive online Ferrari resource courtesy of No Doubt, the 348 website will be up very soon and the 348 video documentary is in pre-production.

The 348 is a steal of a deal for a *thinking* buyer, but the average buyer out there wants an automatic or semi-automatic transmission and power steering for their daily driver.

I understand why they want those things, but wanting such things on a high-performance, used *Italian* car strikes me as bizarre.

I'm looking in the other direction. I'd rather have manual windows and manual door locks...in other words, I'd rather have a 348 that has even fewer luxury items on it than the near-bare machines that we already have.
