I had a Fiero for 10 years with no front plate in IL. I was in a minor accident and the cop noticed, but didn't issue a ticket (not for the accident either BTW).

I've run no front plate on the Lotus for 4 years now and never been pulled over for it. Once a local cop pulled me over to look at the car and say there were "complaints" about me. Not speeding...in fact he never said exactly what they were. I was doing high RPM runs in 1st to unfluff a spark plug the week before (didn't work BTW) so that may have been it. But anyway, he didn't mention no front plate.

Like the 550, there's no way to mount a front plate on a Europa unless you hang it with wire below the grill, or block the grill. If you hang it below, it will be 6" off the ground, but fold back at speed. One guy got pulled over, and the officer was scratching his head when the driver had him confirm there really was a front plate mounted. He was sure it wasn't there when he caught the guy; couldn't see it being folded back from the air!

Dale- I'm good with the idea of paper copies, however, you don't want that to be an excuse to make you a "con" as well, based on a charge of counterfeiting licenseplates....

If you aren't going to have it on, best bet is to carry it in the cockpit with you. Put it up on the dash if pulled over. Say there's no way to mount it on the car, give an innocent smile, and hope for the best.

I've got to go study the NY Penal Code. :)

Heres an argument to use in court, Maybe you'l get lucky & get a Judge who appreciates cars.

Your Honor mounting this license plat ewould mean drilling into my car becasue the manufacturer supplied no mounting, this in turn would reduce the value of my car as it is a limited production collector vehicle.

Who knows, It could fly :)

One thing to also be aware of - not having a front plate gives a Copper probable cause to pull you over. So, if you're doing anything illegal in your Ferrari, the Police have all they need to pull you over and nose around...

Hmmm, I thought of that before. For this to be legal you would have to get the statute that mandates the front plate & read it carefully.

If it only says the plate must be mounted on the front of the vehicle it could work. If it says the front plate must be clearly visible from the sidewalk or whatever then your idea wouldnt work.

This is bad in Texas. I was driving on an interstate freeway, and had a county sheriff, turn around and cross the freeway for this very important violation. I was lucky to have actually made a delivery, and sales call to the county. He gave me a warning. The City of Houston, has written me up one time, for a violation (no front plate) on my white Corolla.

FWIW, here are some relevant excerpts from the NY law:

S 402. Distinctive number; form of number plates; trailers. 1. No
person shall operate, drive or park a motor vehicle on the public
highways of this state unless such vehicle shall have a distinctive
number assigned to it by the commissioner and a set of number plates
issued by the commissioner with a number and other identification matter
if any, corresponding to that of the certificate of registration
conspicuously displayed, one on the front and one on the rear of such
vehicle, each securely fastened so as to prevent the same from swinging
and placed, whenever reasonably possible, not higher than forty-eight
inches and not lower than twelve inches from the ground; provided,
however, that in any registration year for which only one number plate
is issued, such number plate shall constitute a set of number plates for
the time in which such use is authorized, shall be displayed on the rear
of the vehicle and none shall be displayed on its front, except in case
of a tractor, when such number plate shall be displayed on the front of
the vehicle and none shall be displayed on its rear. Number plates shall
be kept clean and in a condition so as to be easily readable and shall
not be covered by glass or any plastic material, and the view thereof
shall not be obstructed by any part of the vehicle or by anything
    carried thereon.

    AND,
S 402-a. Facsimile license plates. 1. No person shall manufacture,
sell, or offer for sale a decorative or facsimile license plate of a
size, shape, color and design which is identical with the size, shape,
color and design of license plates issued by the department.

Connecticut is a 2 plate state, but I've never put a front plate on any of my cars. I've gotten a few tickets for speeding in my jeep, only 1 ticket for speeding in my 308 (none in my TR!), and the no front plate issue was never even mentioned!

WOW. That is some bada$$ copwork to yank a car over with no front plate and then issue a small fine. I tell you, the SWAT teams have nothing on these guys

It's a huge racket in California to shake down drivers for no front plate. It's no suprise the 'beat cops' care if you don't have one, if happen to be in the city limits where there are red light cameras. Go into the next rural county, they don't care.

I have no respect for cops that get off on pulling over cars for this reason, that is not law enforcement, this is not "to protect and serve", this is a no different from Bugsy Malone, Gambini, bah da bing bah da boom guys "collecting" from the people. Sure, you can say that its on the books and its illegal, but there are many other laws on the books as well. You and I probably do several illegal things every day but the no front plate issue is pure BS.

Gez guys all you had to do was ask.

I'll give Bond, James Bond a call and see if he will shed light on his Aston Martin's push button plate detractor and where one can pick it up. Simply push button to "erect" said plate for county-mounty and then push again to "tuck and store" for that next encounter.

    .....Smashing!

Thanks to everybody who wrote to this thread and stuck to it-- rather than degenerating into "F" words and "N" words because you don't even HAVE a Ferrari!

There, I've now posted the Wyoming state statute (photographed right out of the book) and three art concepts for how my local body shop and I will deal with this on Monday. This afternoon, I'll seek a written exemption (for at least the 12 inches from the ground rule) from the director of the Wyoming Department of Transportation.
And as for you "N" and "F" spewers, why don't YOU get a life and stop wiping your stupidly predictable asses on these pages! This is NOT Cardomain.com (where my 550 was car of the month in November, 2004-- out of over a million members)

You're the last one here that should be dishing out advice to anyone.

Melbourne has even more draconian license plate laws. It's a fine and 3 demerit points. (12 points within 3 years means you lose your license)
My son in a riced out Integra was picked up and fined for having no front plate, within one week of ownership. I have been driving the Ferrari with no front plate for over a year with no problems. I have mine in the boot with the (truthful) story ready, that the only place to legally mount the plate is over the front grill, which will cause the car to run hot and potentially overheat.
Some owners here are gettng stickers made up of their plate and applying them to the front airdam.

--- guy came back with name calling and attacked me.
    --- i returned fire.
--- now i am the bag guy.

    Got it.

Another solution: move to Arkansas where front plates, mufflers, windows, trunk locks, bumpers, gun racks, non-rusty body panels, and a few other things are considered optional.
