I am sure it has been discussed but has anyone out there driven the following?

    F1 355
    F1 360
    F1 Cs
    E-Gear Gallardo
    Porsche PDK
    Mercedes Paddle Shift
    BMW SMG

I would like to know input and opinions on who makes the best transmission. Just a curiosity. I know lots of people complain about the F1's so I am wondering how it compares to some if its competitors.

The transmission in the CS is the same as the Modena or Spider, it's the TCU that makes the difference. The programming is more robust, designed for more aggressive shifting hence better PSI settings and all around better unit.

I cannot speak for the others but the PDK and new Mercedes are both dual clutch so they're technically on par with the 458 if you will.

The Gallardo e-gear cars are well, being a previous owner of a Murcielago are crap! They didn't get it right until 09 and the e-gear is now on par with the competition.

    Hope this helps...

I've driven the PDK, e-gear, smg, and now BMW's DCT.

PDK is miles ahead of the others. It is very, very good. DCT is still struggling with lag and programming problems, yet it is much better than the SMG it replaced and basically a toss up with the e-gear.

Can't tell you about the F-cars, yet.

Porsche's PDK and the Mercedes MCT are the newest in terms of technologies. Looking at performance dates and comparing your list of transmissions with their manual versions, the PDK is by far the quickest.

I've never driven a PDK, but the dual clutch in the 458 was simply amazing. The guy I know that had the 458 I drove quickly traded it back when his 599 GTO came in and he prefers the GTO which is the latest and greatest application of the Ferrari F1, however it may be the whole experence of driving the GTO that he prefers over the 458- compared to his Enzo, he feels the GTO is smoother (of course) and faster (!) So the dual clutch technology is the newer and perhaps better technology than the best F1, but some people prefer the F1 (and a magazine write up I read, I believe Automobile magazine, very much loved the F1 of the GTO- whether they would prefer it over the dual clutch system like the 458 is unknown to me)

The 355 shouldn't be on the list as of course the 360 is going to have better technology- the CS is recalibrated from the standard 360 so that is better. I'm curious on any other comments folks have that have driven both the 458 and the Porsche PDK- the 458 was sublime (but regardless I still like my old 3-pedal stick which is good because I couldn't buy a 458 anyway ;) )

I have driven the PDK in the Cayman, Cayman S and 997 S. I had the M-DCT in my 08 M3 Coupe.

For street use the DCT/PDK are better, for track use, the lighter and quicker reacting single clutch in the Scuderia is hard to pass (same technology being used in the 599 GTO now, and the newer FXX Evo).

Getrag builds both the BMW DCT and Ferrari F458/California transmissions.

The best technology is definitely dual-clutch (lighter shaft), but it is too heavy. It's a great replacement for an auto-tranny, but too heavy of a replacement for a manual, or manual based semi-auto (like 599GTO, 16M, Scuderia types). I hope development time brings that bulky weight down, it is a 60 lbs penalty behind the rear axle (bad weight) in the F458.

The best I believe is a three pedal car.

IMHO the PDK in my wife's Panamera seems leaps and bounds ahead of other transmissions, same with DCT in the 458. But after driving my 430 all day yesterday the F1 (I think it is very similar to the CS) is excellent as well. Very engaging. If you have to use Auto Mode for daily driving, definitely would prefer a PDK, but on a sporting side the F1 is excellent from the CS on as I didn't like the F1 in the standard 360 as it seemed to lag and do funny things.

PDK is fairly advance technologically and performance wise. However, it feels so smooth that it is hardly different than an automatic with faster shift times. Not really my preference in a super car but for porsche yes.

Egear isn't the best but i'd say it's still better than SMG and Mercedes automatic boxes with paddles. There is a second kind of transmission from AMG - i think its faster than auto but i am sure it's not that much better in terms of feel.

What you want is a fast shifting transmission that mimics the feel of a manual with blipping and ability to throw the passenger back when shifting (sport mode). the whole idea of manumatic transmission is to make it easier to do it right. not to take away from the shifting itself. i have no interest in manumatic transmission that make it like automatics.
