With internet being $35/month, it doesn't cost too much more to get a wireless card to access the web via the cell networks. Also one gets the added convenience of using it almost anywhere.

But now I ask, how fast is it when compared to a standard wireless signal you would get from a hotspot? Also, how reliable is the connection?

Educate me on this so I can make the right choice :)

Check to see if they have a day trial period where you can bring it back in that time and cancel it if you don't like it. Some companies do.

It would suck for your house to be the dead spot.

If you go to howardforums.com you can probable get a lot of info.

WiFi spots like bars and coffee shops are usually dsl or cable connections. I know the wireless cards advertise broadband speed but I think it would be slower.

    John,

I just got a Sprint card, the Merlin S620, for my wife. No opinions as of yet, PM me if you want to talk about it.

I have a Sprint card in my laptop. I used it for four months while in Cali. Seemed to work just fine for me. I have a cable modem at home and the wireless is just a bit slower but still WAY faster than dial up. Very convenient. If you travel a lot I couldn't imagine any other way.

John...Sprint is one of IBM's strategic partners, and is deploying the Sprint EVDO aircards to many of our mobile employees. I have had one for over a year, and love it. If you can get a Sprint Signal you are golden. Almost every major airport and city in the US has been lit by Sprint with EVDO.

When I drive to a client, I have my laptop on the seat and it is connected the entire ride.

The Sprint Coverage is better than Verizon, and Verizon also has some restrictions on the total amount of data you can use. IT has in the past even limited some of the sites you can use because of bandwith.

The speeds are near broadband. 1-3mbs download, 500-700kb upload. When Rev A is out shortly, it will even be faster.

Got my card(Sprint) and am using it with ease as we speak!

No more messing with fickle modems and routers that need to be reset or fooled with because they can't keep their settings straight or because the cable company is doing work!

Will report more as I use it more.

John I have been working for Verizon for almost two years now. Being in New Orleans you guys have what we call EVDO access which is probably the same as what you have with Sprint. We charge 59.99 a month and give you 15 days to try it out. It runs pretty fast in those areas but up here where I am it runs a little faster than dial-up. If the one with Sprint doesn't work out for you let me know and I'll give you a call. Take care

It doesn't work well on my block, so I don't use it. But I have used it in other parts of the French Quarter and it worked just fine!

Correct, the EVDO access is what I have through this Sprint card.
Thanks Matt, good to know you are around! Long time no see!

I use the Verizon EVDO card on my laptop. I've had it for about six months and no complaints. Matter of fact, I had the better half book a room for us at the Chicago Hyatt whilst we were in route in the 308!

I used to have Road Runner Broadband here at the house but I dropped it and just use my laptop with the Verizon card exclusively. No problems with downloads, etc..

    Cheers,
    Aaron
