Just wondering if anyone has any input on who is the best performing driver (say for the last 18 months). My vote would have to go with Sébastien Loeb from the World Rally champ.

Agreed, but sadly he is sitting on a pitwall, not in a cockpit, so he does not count....!

But he does get the award for Greatest of all time !

I do not think you can compare the participants of the different forms of motor sports. Loeb could end up being a complete failure at any other form of racing.

Nor do I think just because a driver, even Raikkonen, Massa, or Hamilton, drives in F1, that they are the best. That's a load of crap. Frankly, I think driving at 190mph for 3+ hours on the edge is much more difficult than driving any road course. Drafting, constant drafting, takes a very special skill and stamina.

So my vote for the best is, none of the above. The drivers mentioned excel at their particular sport, but today, there is no Mario Andretti, A.J. Foyt, Mike Hawthorne, Jimmy Clark, that wins races in different disciplines of the sport. Maybe they could, but so far, no one has demonstrated they can go from one form of motor sports to another and be a winner. A stretch would be Tony Stewart or Jeff Gordan, but personally I would not make that stretch.

There is no best overall driver. Today, there is only the best in a particular discipline of motor sports.

Tony Stewart would get my vote, he has won in Indycar, NASCAR, USAC (Triple Crown IIRC), darn near won 24 hours of Daytona till the car broke, etc. He's the closest to a modern Foyt, Mario, or Gurney. JPM wouldn't be too far off...he's won in CART, IRL, F1, NASCAR, GrandAm. He's the only driver in the world who can say that.

Although Ron does have an excellent point about drivers staying within their discipline, which is a shame.

this year he didn't win more GP's than he did win.

You would do me a big favour if you'd keep the superficial Hamilton-Is-God-rethoric to yourself. At least in this topic. Thank you!

I think I am going to be sick. I don't think by any stretch of a drugged induced imagination would I put Montoya in the same league as Mario, AJ, Gurney, PJ sr, etc. Tony Stewart and Jeff Gordan come closer.

Nor would I even come close to putting Hamilton or any of the other current F1 drivers at the top of the list. There would be a couple of WRC drivers ahead of them, also from WSC (if that is what it is still called).

Jackie Stewart and Nigel Mansell on the other hand, better all around drivers than anyone in F1 today. I am looking forward to Kyle Busch participating in other forms of racing.
