I have a friend that wants to set up a Maserati and Alfa ONLY store here; no Ferraris, and this is what FIAT seems to want. Who is the person to talk to? E-mail? Phone number? Is it better to talk to someone in Italy, or to someone at Maserati USA??

    Thanks,
    Stu

First it would be a Maserati ONLY dealership since Alfa Romeo does not export cars to North America. There have been lots of rumors that they may be returning in the near future, but the dates are consistantly changing and are still more in the "If" they return as opposed "when" they return.

If he is interested in Maserati franchise, he should contact Maserati North America in Englewood Cliffs, NJ

Again as it was said Alfa isn't exporting for the American markets, altough there are plans - but they have recently been delayed, so that won't happen earlier than 2009

I had a LOT of contacts inside Alfa for over 40 years and they haven't told me it has been moved up to 2009. Unfortunately, many have apssed away in the last 5 years or so. Where did you get that information?

It is FIAT's intention to seperate Ferrari and Maserati dealerships, and add Alfa to Maserati. My contacts at FIAT and Alfa tell me they would prefer "stand alone" Maserati/Alfa dealerships for which seperate buildings would have to be built, rather than having Ferrari, Maserati and Alfa in the same place...

What is your friend's previous automotive experience? What geographical region are they going after? Are there any other Maserati franchised dealers in the area?

Stuart, if you drop me a PM I'll give you the email address of the man in charge of Alfa / Maserati Polo Sportivo.

Alfa Romeo can only reveal that the new range is not yet homologated for the States, but all cars (159, Sportwagon, Brera and Spider) have been engineered for the Stateside market in mind. The design process for these models included thought towards the American market.

At Pebble Beach last year, Alfa Romeo underlined the importance of the US market by unveiling the 8C Spider concept and displaying a mouthwatering selection from the Museo Storico. The new Spider was also backstage.

I also remember that there was to be a roadshow in the States for interested dealers, with the new models (159 and Brera) along with a scale model of the Kamal 4x4. Although, I'm not much up-to-date on these things. I'll have to check.

The return to the States all depends on how the new range will sell in the current markets. Late last year saw dissapointing sales of the mainstream 159 in Europe, however this year they have thankfully picked up. We'll also see the 159 going on sale in the UK as well as Australia.

The Maserati-engined 8C will alledgedly be introduced as a production car later this year - maybe at the Paris salon. This will be a marketing trick, as the next generation hatchback (actually, 20 cm longer than the BMW 1-Series) will feature many styling characteristics from this image-boosting car.
