I'm thinking of getting a vinateg Mustange convertible somehwere between a 68 to early 70s. Found some very nice cars. I need some help w the details on these.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=6236&item=4540867044&rd=1

this seems a little odd because it has a COBRA air filter cover & seems to have some Shelby parts but it doesnt look like a real Shelby. Is it a clone or hybrid ?

Then I found a sweet 70 something conv that I am also very interested in
    Thanks

These really are gorgeous cars :)

I believe that Shelby's connection ended in 1968 or 1969.

Shelby's are more $ than I want to spend, although they are nice

I am thinking of a Mach 1 or a Boss convertible. Did FoMoCo ever make this ?

I had a 1971 Mach 1 back in 1978, Was a great car. They never made the Mach 1 in a convertible, Not sure about the Boss

I believe there was a '70 Shelby (GT 350 or 500??) model but it had a different front clip than the one shown and it did come in convertible. For instance, the headlights were spaced as far apart as possible. There was a chrome wrap around including bumper completely surrounding the grille - sort of AMC AMX-ish.

Mach I was fastback only and Boss was the same (if you find out otherwise, let me know).
Here is a web address that you might want to check out:
    http://links.vintage-mustang.com/index.html
It will lead you to specific info such as vin #'s and other decoders etc.

'70 was indeed the last year for the Shelby but that ebay car ain't even close. It's not a bad looker but nothing special - bunch of dress up parts on a pretty basic car from the look of it. Those scoops on the sides are ucking fugly though and have to go. Badges say 302 so I assume that is what is in it so its no rocket either.

I haven't paid attention to the market for these cars for a while except the Boss 302 but $22 large seems like a lot of money for this particular car. Go have a search at collectorcartrader.com to get a feel for pricing - I just looked at 1969-1973 Mustang convertibles and with a few exceptions they seem to be in the teens for ordinary cars.

    Cheers
    Kevin

BTW prices are all over the board from $12k to $45k. So who knows how much this this is worth

    William,

Since you really want a 'vert, and it seems like $$ is no object, why don't you go with your original plans, and get the Murcie roadster as a graduation present? :)

It Has the hood, the 351 cleveland. But i don't see "mach-1" decal imprinted in front of the rear wheels. The side stripes should be a bit lower too and thicker as well according to an internet source. It should look something like this. Make note of the placement and thickness of stripe as well as placement of mach-1 decal. That is where it should be on a 73 Mach-1.

I really don't know. Maybe the convertible you have pictured which has the different stripes/decals was optioned with a different appearance option or something. I know i've seen those stripes on a Mach-1, but internet sources point to 70-71 Mach's having them, and even those have a "Mach-1" behind the front wheels, which this doesn't. I don't really know. Perhaps you should look deeper into it. Chances are, it isn't a real mach-1.

I also don't think i've seen a 73 Mach-1 in anything other than fastback. Then again, i've only run into a few of them.

    Thanks, nice pics

I think the convert is basically a dress up package w sexy stripes & hood + the 351C engine. I like the fastback for the looks but I love driving convertibles :)

Maybe I'll get a fastback for CT & the convert for Miami LOL

The car in the eBay ad is a regular 1970 Mustang convertible that's (if memory serves me correctly) been pimped with non-functional hood & side scoops, Mach 1 deluxe interior trim w/ clock, Shelby roll bar and a few other doodads. Engine looks to be a 302 w/ 4-barrel Holley carb and Cobra dress up kit (oval air cleaner and ribbed valve covers).

1970 Shelby GT350 & GT500's were leftover '69's with black stripes painted on the hood. The Shelby hoods, grill, front/rear valence and rear decklid extensions were different form regular Mustangs. Very few convertibles were made. Any are worth big $$$ these days.

There were convertibles in 71/72/73 as well. There were never any Boss or Mach 1 convertibles. However, drop tops could be ordered with the Mach 1 style hood, grill and striping. Engine choices were 302, 351 and 429. Engine codes (5-letter of the VIN) include:

    L - 250ci 2Valve 6-cyl. with 145hp
    F - 302ci Windsor 2 barrel V-8 with 210hp
    H - 351ci Cleveland 2 barrel V-8 with 240hp (smaller valves/ports than 4 barrel variants)
    M - 351ci Cleveland 4 barrel V-8 with 280hp
    Q - 351ci Cleveland 4 barrel V-8 with 285hp (Cobra Jet)
    R - 351ci Cleveland 4 barrel V-8 with 330hp (Boss)
    C - 429ci 4 barrel V-8 with 370hp (Cobra Jet)
    J - 429ci 4 barrel V-8 with 375hp (Cobra Jet-R)

Horsepower rating changed to SAE net for 72/73, so numbers will be less. Of course no one ever modified their engines either.

In 1973, the front & rear bumpers got shock extensions to accomodate the federal 5-mph test regulations.

    HTH...
