Car Guy, it was the weekend, and I was away from the computer. Didn't realise I had offended you so (notice all of the "lighthearted smiley faces" in the posts?).

I don't mind admitting when I am wrong, and clearly I thought the 911 turbos were slower than they actually are.

Hey Danno, has the 951 been reliable for you? I am basically going to use the car as a daily driver, so I will not mod it that much. I have been told that a K&N filter is no good for that car. The stock air box with a paper filter is the best thing to use. What are your thoughts on that?

"Hey Danno, has the 951 been reliable for you? I am basically going to use the car as a daily driver, so I will not mod it that much."

The first 4 years I had it, it was flawless. Just the normal maintenance like oil, water, belts, water-pump, clutch, wheel-bearings, brake-rotors/pads, etc. I got 3 years of hard track driving out of it without any problems. Some videos I made here:

    Video-010428WillowSprings.avi
    Porsche951vs928S4.avi (Sears Point).
Both require the basic freeware DiVX codec

It was when my idiotic co-driver blew up the engine at the '01 OTC that I started having some problems (redlining car all the time in 115-degree Vegas heat not a good thing!). I had an engine rebuilt by a really bad shop that left off seals and nuts & bolts here and there. That took me a year to rectify with tracking down all the problems. And that engine self-destructed within 4000-miles with cracked cylinders. So I trust no one to work on my car now. Do all my own work and am looking around for some mines so that I can smelt and cast/forge my own parts; don't trust nobody! If you keep it fairly stock with only mild upgrades like a chip-kit, you shouldn't have any more problems than the normal $1000-2000/year maintenance bill.

"I have been told that a K&N filter is no good for that car. The stock air box with a paper filter is the best thing to use. What are your thoughts on that?"

The problem here were due to the aftermarket MAF kits offered by many vendors. Besides using outdated 1980's technology (which is why I went straight to MAP on my upgrade kits), they also used substandard MAF-sensors in an attempt to cut costs and increase profits. Most common were Ford or ProFlow MAF sensors which are absolute crap! These had large variations in the voltage-response curves, which pretty much required every buyer to get their car dyno-tuned to get it dialed in. They actually marketed the clumsy and crude piggyback signal-interceptor/massagers as a valuable 'feature'!

Anyway, the low-quality MAF-sensors themselves were the problem. The K&N filter oil would creep down the inside of the intake-pipes and coat the sensor-wires on the MAF. Then they would bake themselves on due to the heat on the hot-wire and cause calibration problems. Only the higher-quality Bosch sensors had the power-on self-cleaning feature where they burned off any residual oil, but no one used those sensors for their MAF kits.

So no, problems with K&N filters at all, it's more in their implementation.

I haven't owned a turbo, but if the NA can make smiles on the track, the 951 may make your head fall off.

Also if you want a daily driver you may not want one with that many mods
over 300hp is a lot, might not be as streetable as you would like.
I could be wrong maybe it would be fine. I would love to have a low milage
stock one in perfect shape, so that I could tell what each mod I did to it
would feel like, Great for conversation. Man I love those cars.
Maybe someday I go find one.
