For the past few years and lately in several recent threads, I have seen many people complaining about feeling uncomfortable when in a Ferrari due to the attention they get (e.g. when stopped at a stoplight, when parked, etc.). In many cases owners state they dislike the "wow" factor of the cars, and that anyone who bought a Ferrari for the wow factor is a poser, somehow flawed, has deep rooted mental issues, and not true to the Ferrari marque.

No one seems to want to admit, even just a little, that they bought a Ferrari because the car gets crazy attention, looks great, and is just generally a badass car and when you pull up in one in almost any setting (business, casual, night out, running errands, etc.) you get lots of attention. Sometimes the people in these threads state they bought the car for the performance or quality. Give me a break - very few owners (myself included) can actually drive the car anywhere near what it is capable of, so for what other reason(s) did they buy it?

I'm ok admitting I bought the car (360 spider) in part (probably large part) due to the wow factor. I've had several Porsches and love the fact that a 360 is more of a head turner that any 911 I've ever had. Am I flawed and shallow? What's a poser anyway? If it was all about performance, why not get a closely equivalent performing car like a corvette, viper, or the like for 1/2 the money. Why is it a bad thing to enjoy being seen in an expensive car? Am I sick, do I need mental help? Maybe those that can't admit it feel guilty about their successes? Shallow minds want to know...

I FULLY bought my 328 with 'wow factor' in mind. It wows ME!! If other people wow
as well, then that's great too.

But I bought it to wow the ever loving CRAP out of little old me, and it works every time
I see her, and I wow my head off driving it! Matter of fact, on several driving
occasions I actually said WOW. :D

I agree - it wows me too but I like how it wow others as well. When the 360 was released in 1999 I had just started my law firm and I had a 1981 911 Targa (and I loved the wow factor of that as I have always been a car guy). I told my wife that if I hit certain milestones, I would have a 360 before I turned 40. I went through a few other Porsches between that first 911 and my 360, but I got it last year one month before I turned 40. I love the car (I like the look better than the 430), but I am trying to figure out why other owners dont like it when others look at them in their Ferrari. Why do they feel uncomfortable? If it's too flashy then why did they buy it? I dont buy the performance argument, so what else is it? Who cares if you are the center of attention at a stoplight, or 7-eleven, starbucks, wherever - lavish in it, soak it in, appreciate it.

The WOW factor really applies to the car, not the person driving it. As a very astute man once told me, " When you're driving a Ferrari, people look at the car; when you're driving a Rolls Royce, people look to see who's driving it"!

I've found this to be very true. So, which WOW factor are we talking about; the WOW of the car or the WOW of the driver?

    Where I live, "when you're driving a Ferrari, people look at the car;
when you're driving a Rolls Royce, people LAUGH!"

I honestly couldn't drive a 1986 Rolls and keep a straight face either. Maybe
if I lived in LA perhaps...

I agree .. the WOW factor is the car, which is what WOWed me in the first place and why I bought it. I certainly didn't buy it to be a poser and if I could drive it anonymously I would, simply becoz I don't like the assumption that I am a poser. Hell at 6'1'' balding & weighing 265lb, it takes a hell of a lot more than a Ferrari to turn me into a poser!

To me, it's where and how you drive that makes you a poser. Hitting the beach
road where all the hotties are sunning, staring holes into them as you drive by,
then looping around to do it again. THAT'S a poser!

And in a 3x8, NEVER, EVER, EVER drive while wearing a bright Hawaii aloha shirt!!!

    Two words: pompous and pompous

Just my opinion. Heck - Bagwan Shree Rajneesh had 120 of them at
his Oregon compound in the 1980s.

    To each his own.

Absolutely I like the 'wow' factor. I like driving the best looking car on the road, and the recognition of the 328 in particular makes it a lot of fun.

I also experience some self-inflicted 'wow' after being out of town and returning, or being too busy to drive and then walking out the garage on Saturday.

I could live without the 'snob' factor, but if you exercise some courtesy behind the wheel and talk to people like a real person you can defuse some of that.

Mostly I think people think of me as an eccentric gearhead, which is pretty much spot on.

Just yesterday I went through another session, beginning with "I heard you were driving a Ferrari", resulting in trying to explain ownership to someone in a town where obstructing traffic is the state sport.

I remember thinking, "maybe I should just say it's a kit car and cut it short". ;)

(It isn't -- but trying to explain it to people who don't even put air in their tires is like explaining Mozart to the deaf.)

But I prefer that they remain careful about running into it in the parking garage.

If I had a beach road nearby with hotties sunning everywhere, I'd hit it every day (maybe twice a day), stare lots of holes (and think about all the great personalities they have), and loop around several times. It's not posing if the hotties stare back. ;-)

Just because you can't reach the performance threshold doesn't mean you won't be able to achieve higher performance while in a higher performing car such as a Ferrari.

Secondly, if it was all about looks, there are other cars that can satisfy. The reason the Ferrari WOWs, IMO, is because of what it represents: High performance, driving pleasure and exclusive price tag.

If looks were all that mattered, you may as well have just bought a toy model instead.

Why will the people be interested in who the driver is? In a Rolls the big guy gets driven around.

i bought the cars because i love rolling around in a piece of art. but i do like the wow factor too. when i drive the 512tr somewhere off the beaten track its as if i just arrived in a space ship, amazing. the 456mgt is very subtle and only gets looks when people see the prancing horse, so thats a good stealth car. the 512bbi is like a gorilla just popped into the room !

    my few favorite wow times:
    - when i first bought the car in rome in 2000 i was driving back up to london through monaco, so we stopped for a drink at the hotel de paris. right when i got there a busload of german tourists was just getting out to see the casino. i tossed the keys to the valet, and the tourists just went nuts taking my picture and asking each other who i was, while i just slipped throught the revolving doors. now i know what brad pitt feels like !

    - my wife and i went on a roadtrip to nancy. when we got there, i did one tour of the central square to get to the hotel, then parked in front of the hotel. i went inside to ask where their garage was, leaving my wife in the car. a few minutes later i cam back out and there were 6-7 guys milling around the car looking in etc. i got in and i asked my wife if she was enjoying all the attention, and she said 'thats the first time in my life the guys were not looking at me - all they wanted to see was your car!'...that was a good 'guy' moment.

    - another road trip to reims. lunchtime, searching for a decent restaurant. i see a sign for one and decide to go there. my father searches for it in the guidebook and finds it just as we get there and says to me that we wont be getting in since its a 3 michelin star and requires jacket and tie.....but i am there anyway, in my jeans and polo shirt, so i stop and start walking up to the entrance. the maitre d'hotel walks out and i am fully expecting the usual gallic rejection. i ask him if they still have a table for 2. he asks if this was my car. i said yes. he says, pls park it right here and come in ! i guess the guidebook forgot to mention jacket and tie OR ferrari.

I don't know, when my car's parked I'm still glad I bought the 1:1 model. Frankly, it looks like a toy compared to more modern cars.

Part of the 'wow' is due to the proportions.
