Why own more than one exotic at a time if you can only drive one car at a time? I was just wondering for those that are not collectors but want variety.... would you rather own for example a Murcielago and a 360 spider at the same time and pay interest and depreciation on both or have one for six months and take the other for the other six months to use and enjoy therefore not letting one car essentially sit? Personally I like to enjoy a variety of cars and would love to be able to flip in and out of them. What if I told you that there was a very cost effective way of doing this, would you be interested? I am wondering if there are others that share the same philosophy or do most people just like having 2-3 exotics sitting around because they want the instant variety that each car has to offer.

Until christmas, i did own a 355 spider, 93 Diablo, Mv Agusta 750, Mv Agusta F4100, and a 2000 model Busa. Now i have sold the Diablo.
I think i get the bug from my boss who owns F430,360 spider, 360 coupe, lamborghini Gallardo, DB9, Hummer h2, and a new SL600, as well as two boats and a agusta 109 chopper. Yes some of them are at his villas, but hey he owns them becourse he can and wants to. And he has me to help him drive them.

I have two cars a 79 308 and a 75 911 and just sold a 63 Split Window Vet. The sale of the Vet made room for the 308. Hated to sell it as I've owned it for 30 years. I like the "older" cars because I can tune and work on them myself. The new stuff with computers is not my cup of tea. The 63 and the 911 are relative easy to service...not complicated, but the 308 presents a real challenge. After I learn more about it maybe it won't be so hard to service. To answer your question...I just like tinkering and tuning these cars.

If you ask that, then you have to ask why own more than one car period. Or why own more than one house? If you can and you do so because that's your interest and what you like then why not?

I currently own a 1000 hp Viper and a 360 spider along with 2 other daily drivers for me and my wife. Sure I could afford both cars but some one gave me the option of taking the depreciation hit on one car at a time along with paying interest only on one car.... I think I would opt for that if I could flip it for the other car in 6 months therefore only taking a hit on one car at a time. Perhaps in another 6-8 months get rid of the second car and move on to a Lambo etc...... I just get bored really quick and want something new every 6-8 months. I guess if money was not an issue I would own 10 cars at a time but to some extent it is always an issue even for those who have a lot of it.

my 308 is easy compared to the CIS on the purple 911 i just got. that fuel injection was ahead of its time in the 70's. pain to troubleshoot though! :)

i absolutely love the 63 vette, i have had few "normal" vettes. some years are to die for !

My MO has always been to own multiple cars. I've found that by sticking to obscure and/or undervalued cars I get just as much enjoyment out of cheap cars as exotics. (I also don't buy newer cars...everything my wife and I drive are older cars... her daily driver by choice is a 1990 BMW 325ic, mine a Northstar Allante...an exotic only by original price).

My wife often asked why I didn't sell my 15-20 cars and buy one expensive vintage car like a Ferrari.

While that sounds good on paper, I knew within a few years I'd end up with the one expensive Ferrari and a bunch of cheap cars to play with. So what I did instead was to downsize just a little and buy a cheap Ferrari (308). Though I'm still in a bit of shock from the parts prices (I do 95% of my own work), I anticipate an exotic GT (AM V8, Espada, 330GT 2+2) in my future alongside the 308.

I've not regretted my choice at all; it's like having your cake and eating it too. Some people decide what to wear when they wake up each morning; I decide what to drive.

My view is to use the the right tool for the job. I have three and there isn't much overlap in what they are designed for. The 365 is a great long distance GT car that can carry a weeks worth of luggage. The Mondial is a weekend GT car that is perfect for a 2-3 hour drive to a B&B. The 308 GTS is wind in your hair, de-stress from the office by taking a spirited drive alone car. I wouldn't see any additional overlap with a V8 2+2 cab, a V8 GTB, and a V12 GT car also parked in the garage, but I'm going to need a bigger garage.

Yes, I now have three of them to maintain, but I also have done my homework and can afford to. But there is something special of having a "fleet" of different cars to choose from.

    Make sense?

Good points... Perhaps the more vintage cars have already bottomed out in depreciation and actually appreciating but for the later models that are still dropping in value.... I do like having a "fleet" but I hate having a car sit. Somedays I'll drive one car for a few hours, put it back in the garage and take the other one out. There are only a limited number of hours in a day and sometimes I feel it's just a waste to let one sit for a week or two. I guess it's not such a bad problem to have.

I've been contemplating the same issue also, and resolved to sell the our Mercedes SL (I have a regular car for the week and my F355 for the weekend). My wife rarely drives the SL (She likes the Infiniti FX better) and I have put more miles on the F355 than on the SL in the last year). Therefore hopefully by the end of the year the SL will be gone and in it's place will be a 512TR (It's not a convertible therefore no duplication).

It depends on the day and mood you're in. The insurance is very reasonable once you get to more cars that drivers in the house. It's fun to alternate cars though.

Every manufacture have there own top performance contenders. We buy what we each can afford to. Each vehicle should have its own type of … different excitement. I have settled (so far) for the M6 (now 6 years) and 308GTB (now 12 years). Both are exciting, but in different ways. That’s what I enjoy .. The difference.

That is a very cool collection. I like the odd cars that have a story behind them. Finding parts must be an adventure.

Why own many houses, boats, watches bla bla bla bla bla.............

This thing is very much down to personal taste and most importantly wealth!!

Don't get me wrong people have hobbies and get satisfactions out of it some hobbies are cheap but some are very expensive. To very well-off people money does not come into their equation when it comes to their collections or hobbies.

For example, you can wear one watch at the time ( same as cars) but why have 40 of them, simply enough because you love them and different one has different characteristics.

I failed to mention that I took the FI off the 75 911 and replaced it with Weber carbs. Solved several problems and it ran much better. Love the sound of the carbs. and I can now tinker with it. I'm lost around FI.

I was about to post the same comment. Even by Ferrari standards that red is really vivid, and the euro spoiler looks real clean. Nice ride.

Oh - back to topic: I like variety in my vehicles as well - don't know that I'd want multiple exotics, just because there's better ways to manage my money. But today I enjoyed running errands in the Jeep and then hopping into the 911 (not exotic, but expensive for me) for a scenic cruise. Keeps the experience fresh. Driving the P-car after the Jeep is like rediscovering how great it sounds/smells/looks.

I'm hoping that when I finally get my 308 or 328 that it'll be my sports car for life (or for a long time anyway).

I thought briefly about keeping the 911 when the F-car comes along, but between scheduling the servicing, keeping them clean and making sure I drive everything enough I think the enjoyment would slip into a kind of fleet manager role. And I don't know how many $4000+ service appointments I really want.

I'd guess if the 308/328 wasn't delivering real driving pleasure then I would sell it and get another Ferrari or Lotus or whatever - something rare and gorgeous.

Is that a "time share" proposal I smell? ;)

I smelled it too, but perhaps the responses are not as expected.

Unlike some here, I do suffer from "newmonia". I always want state of the art, as opposed to old technology. I just think the current generation of cars is technically superior and I find technology appealing. (No right or wrong here -- just what turns my crank. New is often not more beautiful)

So, it sounds like I'd be a candidate for time share, but I'm not. If it's just to be seen in the latest and the greatest, time share makes sense, but for me there is a pride of ownership that time share just wouldn't satisfy. When the garage door opens I wouldn't have the same smile on my face.

It it not a time share but me a few friends have developed a model that will minimize depreciation and the up front sales tax hit that just kills people who like swapping out of cars after just one year or so. PM if you are interested. We are just a couple of docs who do appreciate "newness" but hate losing their shirt when we swap in and out of these things.

    Thanks Ducman491

I, too, like a story and the "unique".

The Corvairs have the best (and cheapest) aftermarket support of any marque I've owned with the Minis following closely behind. The Berkeley enjoys exceptional UK club support, so aslong as I don't mind UK sourcing, I'm in decent shape...

Actually parts are not much of a problem with anything but the Tatra and the Ferrari. With the Tatra availability drives the price steeply upwards (you'll note my car is missing windscreen trim...the little chrome bits that fit into the gasket. Only North American supplier wants $1200 to source me windscreen trim in CZ... where $1200 readily buys a complete runnning and driving Tatra...)

The Ferrari stuff is available, but pricey.

I've three and each gets driven once a week, whether it's in traffic to work or just up to the coffeeshop and back or a midnight run on the local freeways.

When I get the 4th and then 5th, they too will get driven regularly. They each have very different personalities and each is enjoyable yet imperfect in its own way. Some days i've a horrible craving for raw, uncooked Countach others its a thirst for 308 go kart with a side of sunlight and salt air. Other days I can only handle a small side order of Boxster S.
