Just bought a little Zig-Zag cigarette making machine, 200 tubes and a bag of Rave, Light tobacco and started banging out my own smokes. The tobacco is pretty good and you can add as much as you want. Less for a faster, easier burn and draw or a lot for a slower burn. Looks like I'll get the cost per carton down to about $23! Anyone else do this?

I used to, long time ago (teens), same equipment & tobacco.

Some folks I knew tried it to roll herbal cigarettes, but handrolled always won out for those.

Getting the amount of tobacco right was the trick for the cig to draw like a factory-made.

Recently, I stood behind a woman paying almost $7.00 for a pack of Marlboros at a 7-11. 40+ years ago, with cigs @ $.35 per pack, those machines were a fun novelty. Now their day has arrived indeed.

Occasionally I'll roll one, but using pipe tobacco (I don't smoke cigarettes). I got this from a friend in Poland while I was visiting. He taught me how to roll them and also how to properly pack and light a pipe.

I have tried those but was never any good at getting one to look good............I'd probably be a bad stoner:D

I bid on an automatic cigarette making machine this week on eBay, but was outbid. I learned today that the supplier sincerely recommends their own tobacco because the longer strands of tobacco can make the machine run less efficiently. I'd have to see that to believe it. For now, the little $9.95 machine works very well (but slow:()

I bought a 1-pound bag today of RAVE light. It's OK, but I sure would like to try other tobacco and have not found small sample packs yet. In short, it's nice getting a pack well below $2.00!

It's no longer worth it, due to the tobacco tax hike. :(

    Peter,

How much was that machine you mentioned on ebay? If I recall from a previous thread...it was well above 200 right? I have one that is 40 bucks and it rolls AMAZING cigarettes. The nice part that I love about rollling your own is being able to vary the amount and "tightness" of your cigarettes. Put a lot of tobacco in and pack it tight and you can have a cigarette that takes 15 minutes to smoke. Looser and it will smoke in the same time as a cigarette you buy out of a pack.

You do need to really experiment with the types of tobacco though because I've found huge differences in quality. It is getting more expensive to roll your own with the federal hike on tobacco, but it is still far, far cheaper. Are you planning using filters as well? I've noticed those vary a lot as well.

How much was that machine you mentioned on ebay? $300 starting and my high bid was (I believe) $315. I see them on eBay between $375 and $425. Retail is $495.00. It has an adjustment to control the density of the tobacco which is cool!

Are you planning using filters as well?: Yes, I have from day-1 been using Gambler brand tubes that have the filters on them.

Have smoked them before with my brother but don't have a roller myself...

They taste just like the American Spirits I smoke. Good. But I may start rolling to cut back on how much I smoke...it takes more time to prepare, so I'll want to do it less.

Same here! If I am busy doing emails and stuff, I don't always take the time to roll one, thus I smoke less! I will usually make a pack for the next day the evening prior. What's worse is that my 15 year old daughter saw the little machine and wanted to make a few. After watching me bang out 10-12 a few nights ago, she started making them for me while Mom sits there rolling her eyes and shaking her head:D

I've also found that they taste a lot like American Spirits. Although I must say I'm more partial to the dreaded, evil menthol flavored tobacco.

I REALLY enjoy a Menthol once in a while, as the taste is kinda refreshing. Back to making my own, one problem I found is that the cherry's have a tendency to break off easily. This happened last night while sitting on my new recliner couch. A big ass cherry dropped in my lap. When I jumped up, it went on the recliner and burned a huge hole! DAMN! The good thing was that the cherry burned a section that is out of view, so I lucked out there!

Camel has a cigg out called crush, it smokes like a regular cigg until you pinch the filter which changes it to menthol. The other day I was in a less desirable part of town, bought a pack of marb lights...10.84 a pack. those store prey on the poor without the ability to travel. The cashier told me I could buy just one cigg for 80 cents, LOL.

I'll have to try one of those, as the idea is kinda cool! As for the price, $10.84 a pack? WOWZERS! That's really sad and part of me would not feel sorry one bit if that store was burned to the ground and the owner's legs got broken. I REALLY hate businesses that rip off and prey on people like that.

Back to my smokes, I bought this 'Top-O-Matic' machine yesterday and it kicks ass! I can bang out a pack in five minutes! It was $59.95 and worth every penny over that little ZIG-ZAG maker I was using.

My first manager assigned me to cig rolling duty at least a few hours a week. That Automatic one is money and truly could churn out a carton with a big bag of tobaccy. Best part is I could roll whatever I like for myself.

That's the same kind I had 40+ yrs. ago, as noted in my earlier post.

They were a couple of bucks ca. 1965, a good-size pack of Bugler cigarette tobacco less than $1, all sold at the corner drugstore long before "head shops" were invented.

FYI I was told by my cigar shop owner that Bali Shag is going to start selling their cigarette tobacco as pipe tobacco with a small amount of pipe tobacco in it so that they can get around the new tax. They say it won't really change anything in the blend because the amount of pipe tobacco can be so small to qualify. One customer ordered cases of Bali Shag before the tax so he would have a large supply.
