This is my second time at bat at removing the 355 steering rack. It is on my car and the boots are all leaking so the rack has to come out to replace the boots. 5 hours, all the known tricks in the book, to get the rack out. It would have been so much easier if they designed that tunnel 1/2 inch more space. At one time, with the rubber cover plate at the foot panel, they have 4 M6 nuts, 12 washers, and with zero space, lying upside down, they had to use effing aluminum washers so you can't even use a magnet to pick them up.

Effing stupid mechanical designer. I like to shove that rack right up his ash. I hate effing Ferrari designers.

LOL Mitchell! Sometimes you just gotta vent. Been there! I hope the bandaids are off your knuckles by Saturday. Peter does not like blood in his swimming pool.

Hi yelcab! I just replaced my rack boots with the rack still in the car... Another case of me being too silly to know it can't be done.... It's a fiddle but not impossible.. Mine wasn't leaking power steering fluid though..

I've posted that thread in another posting and Yelocab said he's well aware of it (heck he's done the job twice now)...that's why he's cursing the car right now :) The mechanic that did the PPI on my 355 did the rack boots for me and said it was likely the worst job to have to do on a 355...probably true given that while it's a pain in the butt to remove the engine/tranny, once you do everything is right there!

If your rack boots are leaking, then your rack is leaking. There should be no fluid in the boots period, they're just dust covers essentially.

I remember your post for help. You spent 5 hours on one side and 2 hours on the other. You were going to post the instructions and must have forgotten. Why don't you post it now to help others?

Hmm Interesting.. I dont recall saying it took 5 hrs for one side and 2 on the other. To be sure though, i checked all my posts, not there from me?? Anyways the whole job to replace boots took me about 3hrs. Sometimes the grease for the rack end joint goes runny, leaking from a split boot.

    Hmmm......

Mine are still good on a 20 year old car that I have owned for 15 years with 65K total miles and 5K race track miles on it.

Have you been changing the PS fluid yearly?

I only got this car 6 months ago, a 95 Berlinetta. It has quite a few deferred items, including this one. Well, it is out now and it will get fixed.
