... considering it was the only definitive "no-nonsense hyperexotic" developed under the reins of Enzo himself as a race car for the road celebrating the absolute peak of Ferrari engineering and success of the marque. Its sensual beauty and unparalled performance would have honored the title flawlessly IMO.

Enzo oversaw, in every way, the development and production of the F40. To have named it after himself would have been out of character for him.
Its name is perfectly appropriate as it represented a very significant milestone, 40 years in business, for a small manufacturer who constantly struggled financially.

I believe it is even more significant in the historical context as it was the last car to have Enzo's breath on its conception. Regardless of the number of F40's produced relative to the other acknowledged Ferrari Supercars (288GTO, F50 and Enzo) it will always be the last one he did and as such will be important forever.

I like the idea of it...

what do you call the F50 and "Enzo" now? Do you call the current Enzo "Luca" or "Schumi"?

Think the F40 should be called the F40. And the Enzo should be called the Slappy, which was Enzo's nickname. Known for digging his elbows into his sides and running about the factory with his forearms flapping about at a ninety-degree angle, Enzo was briefly contained w/straight jacket (s/n 2644). But they figured "what the heck, it's his whorehouse", and turned him loose to carry on flailing away relentlessly - hence the handle and the reason there are few factory photos for reference (think it's tough to get a tour now?).

    The Enzo has his nose.

If it's not the inside joke, it should be.

i dont know much about Mr. Ferrari however IMHO i think despite the company being named after his family he was a little to humble to name a car after himself.

Dude it's not just because he was too humble; it would be just plain weird to have the company named after your last name and the car named after your first name.

"Enzo Ferrari's new car: the Ferrari Enzo"...
that doesn't sound too bad but put your own name in there...
"Andrew Weber's new car: the Weber Andrew"
"Darth Diggler's new car: the Diggler Darth" :)

I wonder if "Ferrari Enzo" sounds odd to Italian people even now.

I completely agree, the F40 is the in my eyes the ultimate super exotic. Enzo's are neat in a super techie F1 sence, F50 is topless, but IMO looks kinda goofy and I hate the wheels. F40 just looks down right evil, and with a couple small mods will lay wood to both the F50 and Enzo.

The F40 is my favourite Ferrari of all, many car magazine writers feel the same way to. Even after 18 years since it's release they still say the F40 is the most entertaining, raw car of all time.
I bought a German car magazine called Auto two years ago. They had an article about the F40, they said in the article that they were in such high demand and the performance so ahead of its time that people were paying up to FIVE times its retail! The car held records for top speed and acceleration. Even today 0-60 in under 4 seconds,1/4 mile in 11.7 seconds and 325kph top speed is very impressive.

Funny, that's exactly the way i feel about the Enzo...

Besides, as already said, it would've been kinda funny for Enzo to name a car after himself... It only makes sense that the factory did it, after he died, to honor him... i expect lots of stuff to be named after me, but not until after i die... :)

As for the proper name of the Enzo, it's 'the Enzo Ferrari' - with emphasis on 'Enzo'... It's got a special connotation - almost as if 'Enzo' means 'special'; think of it that way... The special Ferrari... The Enzo Ferrari...
