I watched 1-14, back when it was PPV and they had some of the Gracies, Ken Shamrock, Dan Severn, Oleg Taktarov, etc... Taktarov is nuts - I remember that one championship bout I think it was he and Shamrock went 14 min+ on the ground, with Oleg's face bleeding.

I liked it when it was real life Street Fighter 2 - multiple disciplines, different outfits, no gloves... now with the standardized format there's less differentiation, IMO. Maybe it's only superficial, but I stopped watching this new format.

Mine is Liddell as well, great face for the sport. Tim Sylvia second. I got to say though, I have respect for all of those guys.

Steve- love the sport- it's probably my favorite right now, but it's kind of hard to throw a "UFC party" that's as fun as a Superbowl or NBA playoff party (lot's of girls don't get into it, and a party w/o girls is, well, not much of a party...). Of course it was better when it was 99% "no holds barred" but it still is more exciting than boxing, and the guys are way more athletic in my mind.

I'm lucky enough to have the Gracie Studio nearby (in Torrance, CA) and have taken classes from "the new generation" - Rorion's kids. But no "pipe-dreams" of competing- just feel a little more confident in "bad" situations.

    Good to meet another enthusiast.

    Regards,

    Eric

I agree. I remember the old format where all shapes and sizes compete against each other. I was a big fan of the Gracies as well. I remember them going undefeated for I think 8+ years while fighting people who were way out of their weight class.

I've been watching quite a bit of UFC lately. It is especially a treat when it is broadcast in HD.

I don't know if it was a replay, but did anyone catch Tito Ortiz vs. Shamrock just the other night? I thought Shamrock would have done better, but I guess age is catching up to him.

never did until the other night. it was a match between Ken Shamrock and a guy I can't recall. MAN! did shamrock get the s*it beat out of him. The other guy didn't have a scatch but shamrock's face looked like hamburger. man that other guy was good, deceivingly quick.

    ah, yes, good point.

Bruce-excuse an UFC newbie Q, the announcers made a point about the fighters getting up against the fence, is that some kind of advantage, like dbs using the sidelines in football?

DISADVANTAGE IF YOUR ON THE BOTTOM

WHEN A FIGHTER IS AGAINST THE FENCE ON THE BOTTON, HE HAS REALLY NO DEFENSE AS HES BEING PUSHED AGAINST THE FENCE WHILE THE GUY ON TOP CAN POUND HIM UNTIL SUBMISSION

YOU WILL SEE EVERY FIGHTER TRY AND STAY AWAY FROM THE FENCE

Hey, how do the UFC fighters stack up against the Pride fighters? I haven't kept up lately, but once in awhile i'll have conversations with people and some claim that Pride fighters would destroy UFC fighters. What are your thoughts?
