So would any of you consider buying this watch? Audemars Piguet Royal Oak Offshore Grande Complication 26571IO.OO.A002CA.01 I think i'd have a hard time justifying spending this much on a watch. (plus I don't think the misses would be too pleased
It's not about how much a watch costs. It's about how much you stand to lose of make on a watch. I would never buy a watch that's worth less the second I walk out the door. That watch therefore is not worth what you just paid for it. If you're spending thousands on a watch, you'd better know the market. It's just like buying and selling Ferrari's. There's a huge market to it. Yes, I'd rock the hell out of that AP.
I would buy a true and proven Collectible at that price. Which in the watch world Patek Philippe has no equal. The 3939 is very nice. Clapton just sold a vintage Patek Philippe for $3 Million last year. The right ones are like the old Ferrari cars , they bring massive money. Every major maker does a tourbillion these days, so they are not that unique, plus they were really designed for a pocket watch. There are tons of $300,000 Plus watches. Like art most will not go up, only very few. The cheap Patek with potential is the 5396R that was made for the Botique at the Tiffany store in NYC. Only 100 made, I would imagine these are all gone. Things like this usually go up pretty fast, and it looks great. Back in 2001 the 150 anniversary Patek did for Tiffany was selling for $24,000, and about a year later they were bringing almost $100,000 , they have since cooled down, but still bring about 3 times what was paid. Not sure the watch you are looking at will be worth 3 time what you would have to pay. Just thinking out loud, and I like to look at new watches and see what really hits me. Very few in the end. The value is not there on most of them. Best, John
Patek Know anything about the current pricing for the Gondolo 5030J PP did for Tiffany & Co. I purchased it when I was working there back in the early 90s.
So what new watch isn't worth less the second you walk out the door? Do you only buy used watches that you can get a good deal on?
Sadly, the T150 wasn't a very attractive watch. While it was the first annular calendar Patek, the stupid dial design hurt it. I do know of a few clients, though, who bought one in each metal type. As I recall, Tiffany only gave employees a 10% discount on these rather than their normal 30%-guess I still should have bought one!
Buying luxury things like expensive watches is a relative thing. It isn't surprising that someone who makes $120k per year might buy a $7k watch. So, for a $700k watch, all it takes is someone who makes $12M per year to be the same ratio. (and there are more than a few folks making $12M or more per year out there). .
I frankly like the unskeletonized and uncomplicated versions better but if you really like it, go for it. After a certain point (and often price) it's hard to justify purchases like that except that you love it and plan to use it.
Most of the limited edition AP ROO's resell for much more than list upon release, that is if you can even get an A/D to sell you one. Barrichello ser #2 sold for almost 50K back when the list was in the 20's.
