I live where there is little need for summer AC because of the few days where its unbearable and also because the eves are cool. I am thinking of installing a 36" whole house fan in the attic that would replace the warm muggy air with cool outside air. I have seen them work and they are amazingly efficient. I was wondering if anyone here knows of new technology and designs ( I was thinking a fan belt model for lower rpm and noise ).Thanks

Purchased ours from Home Depot and self installed
    36 inch direct drive
    2 speed

    pros

cools house in minutes including upstairs
    very cost effective

    cons

noisy, but it is on only for a couple of minutes
if you operate in the spring or summer and you have allergies, you will pull in pollen

make sure to install in the center of your house, which more efficiently draws air from windows to center of house as oppose to across the house and out

Thanks for the information. Is there a fear of having TOO HIGH a CFM fan. Say as in sucking papers off a desk?

When I have the fan on high, papers have not been pulled off tables. However, we have some light weight paper ornaments hanging from the ceiling - throughout the house - and the air draw is sufficient to cause these ornaments to flutter throughout the house. Actually entertaining "watching" the ornaments swing as cool air is being drawn in.

thanks everyone. I will begin my search when the weather warms up a little, as putting a hole into the cold, these days, leaves me shivering.

There are sunny yet cool days where the attic gets very hot from heating of the shingles/decking.
I wonder if the flow can be reversed ?
Also our windows are a pain to open close.
    Power windows next !

Whatever fan you buy, make sure it is a belt drive not direct drive. The belt makes much less noise. When you are trying to sleep you'll thank me. Vent through the roof, there are a variety of ways I have had several. They are absolutely FANTASTIC!
