This is a good explanation of the "Trump tariffs" and if you watch it carefully AND are old enough you will see it's not such a bad idea .......... I remember AWA fondly, AND a lot of other Australian manufacturers WAYY back
Well Steve 3 other internet news channels had the same thing at about the same time. I only chose the ABC example 'cos it was the last one I looked at. I'm thinking you and a few others on here are the blinkered ones......much like a few Labor supporters here and elsewhere.
You’re misunderstanding me, Simon. I know what Trump said, I agree that it was reported everywhere, and I’ve repeatedly said it wasn’t necessary or helpful in this case regardless of the fact that I agree with him in general re DEI. The reason I asked if your quote came from the ABC (as I knew straight away it must have) is simple. Rather than just publishing a direct quote from Trump, it editorialised what he said with an obvious bias towards being critical of it. That is not the job of a news organisation. Especially a taxpayer funded one. They could have just said “President Trump has said…” and directly quoted him and left it at that. Why didn’t they?
+365 from me for DTrump: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2025-02-06/trump-signs-ban-on-transgender-athletes/104903598
There is a lot of things I like but give him a Zero on his method of execution. Frankly it's all about him.
Have you been there? I have, it's a beautiful coastline. Beirut was a paradise before the civil war and Gaza has a much nicer climate than say Dubai, which has become a major tourist attraction. Or the world could do nothing and leave it as a perpetual sh1thole, which is what the left want, run by terrorists as a nuisance to Israel.
btw Trump is exposing the hypocrisy of the Arab world, none of whom like the Palestinians or want them in their countries. e.g. most of the gulf states have hundreds of thousands of Pakistani "guest workers" who build and operate 80% of the infrastructure, under conditions that equate to slavery with no rights whatsoever. Why couldn't they replace them with Gazans, who share their language and culture?
Did you watch the complete press conference? I watched about 40 mins of. I thought it very interesting and full of promises and expectations. I hope it comes off. I still think Trump is a dreamer and opens his mouth without engaging his brain,as been shown in the several backpedals he's had since taking office this time. I have my wish/promise list open with the successes verses fails. He's going to make Gaza 'owned' by either him or the USA,he's going to buy Greenland and he's going to or wants to make Canada the 51st state. Lets see which of all of the above see fruition. I have an open mind re this but can't stand listening to the idiot.
Probably none of it will actually happen like that, IMO. It's ambit claims, chest- beating, call it what you like, aimed at getting people off their arses to actually do something. With Trump it's always about the deal, and this is the way he starts things off. Then a deal will be done. Pretty smart if you ask me. Certainly more effective than the soft-cock approach of the left.
We'll just see... once the 'ordinary people' who voted for him start copping the tariffs and don't have any cleaners/pool boys/ childcare/ labourers etc it will be a different story. The Gaza/Greenland/Canada hyperbole is just distraction. Speaking of which, who noticed Australia handed over $800m yesterday for some second hand subs we'll probably never even take possession of...
I disagree with your first sentence. I think “elites” like your good self constantly underestimate “ordinary” people. When it comes to logic and common sense, I’m more inclined to think the so-called elites are the ones seriously lacking. I suspect the “ordinary people” knew exactly what they were voting for, and would be quite happy with what they’ve seen so far. As to your last sentence, I have NFI what you’re talking about. So I guess I didn’t notice. To what do you refer?
The $800M was for defence tech. As to where the pool cleaners are going to come from, there'll be plenty of ex public servants... ‘Meltdown for the ages’: Maxine Waters denied entry to Education Department
Albo and his band of socialist misfits are pulling apart the Taipan Helicopters and burying them at 20 Mill a pop ! When we could have sold them to the Ukraine WTF?? Now that's a good idea. They are probably in the same hole they buried all the F111's. That's the level of Australian defence tech. Penny Wrong is a total lunatic. Couldn't organise a good f#@k of a friday with a fistful of fifties F.F.S.
We would have signed a contract when we bought them, requiring EU approval for whomever we wanted to sell them to (military secrets) and of course Airbus (the company, not Albo) wouldn't want them on the market disrupting their 2025 revenue plans.
They were hopeless. Why anybody would buy French tech is beyond me. Cheese-eating surrender monkeys...
