..to get the iPhone?
I stopped by the store in SoHo yesterday. Caught a glimpse of the thing and then couldn't resist. Spent the morning cleaning up my address book on the Mac in preparation for syncing it. There is a LONG wait on AT&T to transfer number if you already have an account (i do). The reports are 15+ hours. I've been waiting since about noon. So, right now, it is just a cool paperweight. That said, it looks sensational and the screen is fantastic.
Nice - I wonder how's real life usaged looks like - i.e. reception, keeping touch screen clean, freezing, Wifi, Internet access, etc...
if you are still having problems w/ activation, call 877 800 3701 option 1, they were able to activate it on the spot for me.
arrrghghh, don't get me started on the iPhone... just got done with a 30 page thread on Howard Forums... All I will say is. Innovative UI Sub-par functions
I heard Noah got his hands on one the day they came out. Im sure he has some input on whether its worth it or not.
I didn't bother, even though I tend to buy everything Apple makes. No significant third party app support, and the fact that it's GSM was a deal breaker for me. My Treo still works better, albeit with a shunky interface by comparison. If they come out with one with a CDMA radio that's not bound to a given provider, and either someone cracks the thing or they open up the third party app market, I'll get one in a heartbeat.
The iPhone will never come out with CDMA radio. The main processor of the iPhone (a fast one at that... 800MHz) is bundled with the radio. That's one reason why there's no 3G in the iPhone. The fastest processor with 3G was half the speed and would not be able to handle the very graphically intense OS X.
Ur.. say what now? The processor in the iPhone is a Samsung ARM chip. It has nothing to do with the cell radio or the air interface it supports. The radio is separate from the phone processor-- it's an Infineon Smarti. The only reason Apple didn't make a CDMA phone was due to the fact that discussions with Verizon fell flat on the issue of Verizon wanting Apple to make use of their music store, rather than iTMS, which Apple told them to stuff. Dunno what happened with Sprint, but likely something similar. Making a CDMA version would require they build another board with a different radio chip on it, but it's not like there's some significantly huge technical obstacle to overcome. Treo supports both GSM and CDMA in exactly the same way-- a different radio chip with the same processor and hardware.
I wrote it wrong. What I meant was that the Qualcomm 3G radio cant operate on the same speed as the samsung main processor.
Well I don't think you need more than a blackberry...but anyway you guys have money celebrate it hehe
Just picked up my 8gig version of the iPhone. Debating whether or not to keep it. Jury is out on how useful this thing is going to be, and I'm not sure if I want to pop into a DoD meeting with one of these things -- kinda like showing up to a black tie affair in an Evo
Ive taken the evo to nice places and events. Let me tell you it gets more attention than any other car...probably cause it doesnt belong P.S. on a side note, I am guessing if you work with the DoD you have security clearance...welcome to the club
Sitting on the phone with AT&T for the last hour on a beautiful Saturday. Wife is really giving me a dirty look to boot. I am about ready to buy a plane ticket, hope on a flight to Bangledesh, and donkey punch "Cindi." How hard is it to activate one of these pos? Word of advice to all you iPhone purchasers: have the AT&T store do the credit check in-store. This saves a tremendous amount of time for you, as your phone is essentially unlocked out of the box. Would love to use this thing, but it's just a pretty paperweight right now.
