I'm technically living in Cali, but I'm touring with my rock band so much that I'm hardly ever there. The CA state income tax is really high, so I'm thinking of switching home base to Vegas. Anyone got tips on this kind of thing?

Pro tip: if you "move" to NV, you better move to NV. Don't try to cheat the system. Hire an accountant.

The tax benefits are basically for residents. You need to work with a decent accountant. The problem with California, unless you move 100% out they can get you tax wise. They have resident, part time resident and even non resident can be all taxable if you earn income in California.

Yes I totally agree. California will come after you and it will not be pretty.

Get a pro and avoid paying more.

You can legally move to Nevada. What you need to make sure of is that you officially moved out of California.

    HAHA awesome.

My research so far is showing that once you change all the obvious stuff like car reg, license, voting, etc the next thing cali looks at is your bank statements to check if you used your CC or an ATM in cali at any time in that year. Interesting.

I have some experience with the CA tax board. If they find any evidence of income sourced in CA, they'll go after you. Same with having a out of state registered car. In fact neighbor state plate, if seen by the CHP, they'll check you out.

The rule is you must pay CA tax on CA sourced income, whether you live there or not. But if you have other income form businesses in other states you don't have to pay CA tax on that. Also, if you sell the company, no CA tax if you don't live in CA.

True. But if you keep a place in California you can become a part time resident. They tax all income even non CA income for as long as you are present in CA. Once a resident of CA, its very hard to get out of the tax system, unless you move 100% out of CA.

"How California taxes residents, nonresidents, and part-year residents
•California residents - Taxed on ALL income, including income from sources outside California.
•Nonresidents of California - Taxed only on income from California sources.
•Part-year residents of California - Taxed on all income received while a resident and only on income from California sources while a nonresident."

Anyone know how CA taxes work for stock market money? Dividends, cap gains from trading sort of thing. If out of state resident, this wouldn't be 'CA sourced', since it's just a few clicks on a brokerage website, but if I were visiting(as a non-resident) CA while clicking, who'd get my taxes? CA or my official state of residence?

Want to make sure I understand this.

If you own a company based in California, but you are a resident of Nevada, when you sell the company it isnt subject to California state tax ?

I left that DOPEY state in 1989. I wouldn't live there for FREE !!! Vegas has everything you could possibly desire. The Greatest Concerts ( 15 for me in 19 ) , Excellent Restaurants,VGKnights,Raiders, close to Mt Charleston and NO State income Tax ( for those who are still employed ) .

I have been looking at this move for a while now. As a work from home employee/contractor for some of the tech giants, I am trying to get out of the "gravitational pull" of the state FTB. I have no options for C2C, only W2.
