I remember reading on this board that a failed automatic transmission in a 456M GTA results in a $75,000 job.

Does anyone remember reading that? Can anyone find me that link or verify this?

I also recall reading this. Amongst another F-C'er or two, our own 'Napolis offered that bit of cautionary advice to a GTA-hungry soul some time ago on the old site, which, IF all goes well, could be restored in 10 or so days, for searching.

I believe the actual number is $52k, and the source was Michael Sheehan in Sports Car Market magazine. And to nip this in the bud, it is NOT a GM-sourced transmission.

However, for less than $52k you would think you could find someone to rebuild the thing, and machine any necessary parts.

Interesting, the parts guy at F of Orange County, CA says it is a GM Tranny and can be repaired by a good transmission guy.

The housing is not, the internals of the Transmission are GM. The differential parts are however not GM.

I wouldn't doubt that it could be repaired by a good transmission guy. However, according to an article in Road & Track (which is referenced in the thread linked), it is not a GM transmission. It is made by Ricardo (http://www.ricardo.com).

Ricardo is a division of GM seperate from the Hydramatic division. Ricardo is more involved in commercial and industrial equipment. They did however go to their sister company to get the transmission parts. The transmission internals are out of some GM front drive trans. Everything else is special.

You may very well be right about the transmission internals. However, Ricardo is not a subsidiary of GM-- they list their 10 largest shareholders on their website, and GM is not among them.
