I have lost the one and only key I had for my 1999 Lexus LX 470. Part 1: I called Lexus today and they said "You will need a 'new' computer and a new key...that will be $2000 plus labor and towing expenses (115 miles)." Yeah right. Part 2: Called a locksmith here locally, and he said "no way". He said that there a number of locksmiths in Dallas area that can "erase" the car's security computer, re-program it, and cut a new key, all for $300 or less. All I have to do is take off the passenger door lock (the car is unlocked) and take out the computer, and deliver both to the capable locksmith. Any suggestions on a "high tech" locksmith in Dallas? I will be in Dallas on business this Friday, so I wanted to line someone up to perform this for me. Thank you F-chatters.
Do you have triple A? I wonder if they could cover something like that or contact Steve Metcalf in Ft. Worth at http://lexutech.com. Tell him you know me, he has done plenty of work for me & my family. My integra is having a engine rebuild at his other shop, http://www.dealer-alternative.com If anything he may know a better solution to your problem.
I have no idea whatsoever. Theres your response! Will you have time for lunch on Friday? We can get a group together pretty easily.
Your locksmith there in the hinterlands should be able to make a recommendation or two. If he can't, he's just punting the problem.
Thats great Will, but I was talking to Husker! I see you all the time. Image Unavailable, Please Login
$2000 is parts + labor + sucker fee. $300 is about right, even a little bloated. But yes, the computer chip/immobilizer built into the key must be programmed or your ECU must match the new key. Either way, it isn't something a typical locksmith will be able to do.
Another locksmith question... Anyone in Dallas-area that can cut Ferrari keys? The keys are hardened, steel I think, and they need special equipment to cut them. I looked all over Arlington with no luck.
