Before the factory started protecting it's logo, one could buy those decals in any size almost anywhere.

+1 to Mr. Niles comment, and before that, they were actually hand painted on.....

Just adding an example. This one has a great patina, painted on a 250 GTO. I took this photo at Sonoma Raceway on October 24, 2007. Car was painted with #11 and is a RHD. IIRC, a very knowledgeable and friendly lady was at the wheel for the event. I spent a few minutes speaking with her. Sorry - I'm not sure I ever knew her name.

The event was the GTO 45th Anniversary Event - Moet & Chandon Tour - in Napa Valley. Awesome event!

Thanks for the answer. I didnt think about Ferrari's protecting their logo.

I love the big and painted ones.

    The GTO's above looks beautiful.

I am not sure why a GTO's SF shield would have been hand-painted. In 1955, the factory was using water-transfer decals for the shields. perhaps even earlier.

The only hand painted shields I remember were on Scuderia Ferrari Alfa's.

But then I'm not a noted historian.

I noted your birthday, big guy! (and you thought it might stay in the general forum . . . HA.)

    Wayne...
    1) Sandy McNeil is still racing...quite a woman!
    2) I have one of the decals, which I got in 1957.
