I have and have had many collections of various interests. From Ferrari and car models to Robots and Rayguns to antique toy cowboys, they seem to eventually end up in boxes and storage of one kind or another. Sure I get a collection out now and then for display for awhile collecting dust then dust them off and back in the boxes in a closet or storage locker.
There comes a time when you're not a collector but a hoarder. I don't collect for potential profit later on, I collect because the love of the subject matter and the joy of the hunt. I would catch a plane and fly to different cities just to go to toy shows to appease this passion. at one time I had probably the largest collection of toy Rayguns / Space guns on the planet and eventually they were relegated to a rented storage locker in the dark only to be taken out for a request for photography for a book. I finally sold most of them off except for a few prototypes,
Does any of this ring true with any of you and your collecting.?

I collect diecast and books on Ferrari, but all the cars come out of the boxes. I think it looks silly in the original boxes. Makes your home look like a store. I might understand if you have a really rare model that you might sell in the immediate future, but if not it's like having a Ferrari in your garage and not driving it.

    Yes.....

I have probably 8/10s of my Ferrari die casts displayed, but it begs the question about buying the rest!??

Then I went on a Nambe binge, after finding a HUGE old trove of it, from the '50s, in an Estate Sale..so now I have hundreds of pieces.

The latest has been vintage Penn reels, my Mom split Dad's tackle between siblings that will never use it, and now I have DOZENS of reels ready to go, and you can only fight one fish at a time...money would have better spent into the boat itself, or fuel.....

But all these things, have a beauty to them....a joy to admire, to hold in your hand.

When a set of Penn Senators came in, a 4/0, a 3/0, and 2/0..in Royal Crown bags, spotless, you know you are holding a treasured item in your hand, that a gentleman (or his children) has finally released.
The current production is plastic, from China..

If you have enough room, it's a collection.

In my 700 square foot apartment, I'm afraid hoarding IS a better word!

Hoarding and collecting are two different things/issues, I am a collector of memories and hope I can remember them.

I may not have crossed the hoarding line, but I sure had a little chalk on my shoes. Had to have every one of a series, every variation, every color. Something clicked and I have sold off over 2500 cars, planes, books, magazines, etc.

Back to enjoying the ones I kept, and they are all displayed on two shelves. They now mean a lot more.

The prices of things I'd like to collect - real medieval swords, watches, fine art, and the best car models - have kept my needs for storage to near none.

Still haven't unpacked my modest model collection from last move in december of '09.
