Bc people are curious. Bc people are fed a lot of BS about the costs of these things. Media always exaggerate the price of Ferraris. So when they see one, any, they think it's half a mil and obviously for the average guy making 50k, that is mind blowing. '
I was next to an mkiv supra once in my Ferrari and said that to him. His reaction was priceless. Sent from my toilet using FerrariChat.com mobile app
I used to answer about $10 a pound....ends that quickly. The best question wasn't what do you do? But, instead, he said "what do I have to do to own one'? I replied, spend less than you make always, and use those "employee's" to make you money. Nice bagger at Trader Joes asked.
I answer honestly. Most people have no idea and are genuinely curious to learn. Dismissing curiosity with a sassy zinger doesn't leave a good impression
Lol I did the same and am at $119-$130 per pound, depending on whether you use Ferrari’s weight claim on the F8 (3164) or it’s actual weight (3450) [emoji23] Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
My F car is 1983 and grey Pretty much the only questions are from gearheads who kinda know what it is. Happy to talk about the car. ive owned it 32 years so tell the questioners I bought it age 29 with all the money I had plus borrowed 15k from my father. It was all about passion and dedication. Owned the car long before a home. Priorities If people ask what it’s worth now I say way more. Then they’ll say good investment and I respond if I had to add up what it cost to maintain not so good an investment. Then Return to it’s all about passion and enjoying driving it. in short if it’s car people or those passionate about cars happy to talk if not I move on. I imagine if you had a newer one in red there would be a lot of questions fixated on value. as to what I do, I always tell people if you really want the car then you figure out how to get there same as anything else in life. I really enjoy talking to the young gearheads will talk cars how to get etc as long as they wnat. the truth is in my case the biggest driver of my motivation for success was pretty much always about cars and getting more. Today have wife kids two houses on the water boats etc, it’s still about more cars. Also an equal opportunity car fan, not stuck any particular marque. It’s all a bout the machine what it does and what I want it for not the badge. Freinds are horrified that like Excalibur’s. To me a Ferrari was never any sort of success pinnacle it was always about how cool and good the machine is. it does aways amaze me how cars are such a social status thing. Years ago this guy I knew had an old 928. Back then it was a 10k car, but people were like who’s on the porche. mostky I drive around town in grey 2010 chev equinox.dont have to worry about it or where I park, dont mind beach sand or an errant ding. if we go out for dinner usually the wife’s stelvio She doesent worry about parking. maybe that’s why I don’t get questions. The nice cars come out on nice days early in the am for vigorous drives. I do get questions at gas stations with the orange lotus track car on the trailer. Once you tell people it’s a Toyota minivan engine they can relate. in short gear head questions great, envy ones best avoided.
If I weee a billionaire it would be pretty cool to tool around in a 3.5 mill 288 and tell people it’s a 70k 308
Not sure I understand this post. If they know you, then there wouldn't be these questions, because they know you...what am I missing?
He’s saying, if it’s your friend/acquaintance, then it would be fine to ask ‘hey man, how much did you pay for it?’. That’d be normal. But to him, a stranger asking is intrusive. Sent from my iPhone using FerrariChat
Well, it's not just Ferrari. I had my Z06 at the car show portion of a local festival here, and when I was around it, I got asked that question several times. I just answered it honestly, what else could I do at that point.
A neighbor of mine is a semi-car guy, mostly to impress his kid, he does reno work and does good work, has a nice house in a nice hood, drives a 16' Mustang GT350. He took an interest in my cars I've had over the years, I guess to connect, or common interest. Cool, I love people like that. When I had my GT-R, I even let his kid sit in it, and rev it. Over the years I moved into a Porsche GT3 and his tone started changing a little. From "I love the cars" to "why are you changing cars so much" and I can smell him starting to act weird about it. Then I got a 600LT, then the 488. His tone, and conversations changed for the worst into jealousy for some reason. "One day, I'm also going to have a Ferrari as well" ... to "I know you don't make that much money, how can you even afford that" ... "Now you have a real car, not like the McLaren" At that point, I was disappointed that I thought he was a honest, cool car guy, but he's just a showoff/poser typical Mustang guy. And I knew him for a quite a few years, but at that point, once he started behaving and saying weird things like that, I just stopped talking to him and cut him off my life completely, not worth the drama.
As you said semi car guy. I recently read Enzos memoires from 62. I'm paraphrasing but at the time he said there were 3 types of owners. Young sporting men who may become racers, men over age 50 who are finacilay successful and good drivers but whose career took them not to racing soa ferrai is the outlet for their skills either on track or road, and those who want to effect an image, not great drivers but who want to effect eratz racer and or sucess/wealth. The last group according to Enzo were in 62 the least numerous. Today id argue the last group is almost Ferraris entire customer base and the products reflect that focus. Not just ferrari but all exotic builders. Good as the cars may be, its all about brand pose, projecting sucess, and ease of use so any squib can drive it. To be fair until they hit this formula spot on under luca Ferrari, (lambo and the others all) struggled for sales. lets look at modern road conditions, you cant really use all a mustang Gt has to offer let alone a ferrari. So cars and fast cars are mostly to the public at large all about image, and maybe feel. Your neighbor as you said is not a pure car guy, its something he does not fully understand hes not a gearhead hes doing it to relate to his kid. Now you're showing up in ever more "expensive" cars and he's feeling he will never afford that, he's seeing $ and envy not cool machine. If it wasnt your car, it might be your boat or house he envies. the truth is if youre a gearhead, you love the machine. I love a GMD T50 and T33, a 288, prob Ill never have one but theyre great. To others its simply a display of wealth more expensive possetion than you have or can ever have, and to be fair that is the position that supercars mostly inhabit in todays society as luxury items for the wealthy. porche used to straddle that gap, but its lux wealth now too. years ago we were on a chartered wooden boat in turkey, last day there wa this magnificent yacht anchored a little way out, the launches were replicas of the yacht. Our captain saw me looking at it and said dont feel envy, were all enjoying the same ocean, and we can go closer in to the beach. Thats the point, we either enjoy the drive or not, same rads same speeds Its also a misnomer that regular folk cant afford this or that. A ferrari 360 is well below 100k as are any number of prche. If youre a gearhead and cool cars are your priority there is always a way. But it is about priorities and what the car means to you, esp if you dont have a huge budget. Top your neighbor the car is about wealth and status, he feels envy based on his value structure. Its funny because the Gt350 was 70k car, so he could have had a ferrari, or an Mc12. In any event, and this is just my opinion, a shiney new exotic is always going to generate envy amongst many. Porche used to be cool because it didnt do that. Corvettes still get away without envy because there are so many and they have "blue collar roots". An older car esp if not red, fits simply into the cool classic vibe, people dont know what theyre worth and seem far less triggered, plus you can still use its performance on road. Color is also a big issue, red flag to a bull and all that. In the end though who cares what others think, its about you and your enjoyment for whatever reasons.
He can’t have the Ferrari cause he can’t wrap his head around the maintance. Unlike how easily and cheap you can maintain that ford junk That’s why the ford is for the poor people who can only stomach the upfront purchase cost and not taking care of the actual car
