As some of you may know I am the proud new owner of a 1989 Mondial t. Low mileage Florida car, melted fusebox (which is how I ended up with the car in the first place) but cosmetically in decent shape. I am in the middle of a major service and keep finding things that concern me. Although the underhood sticker says that this is a catalyst vehicle the Cats are empty and the thermocouples are not attached to anything. The wiring harness plugs are lying loose in the trunk. I can't seem to find where the module is for the thermocouples. Can someone tell me where they are supposed to be mounted? Between the empty cats and the missing modules I am beginning to become rather annoyed at the po. I intend on going the Marco route and replace the empty cats with magnaflows and may consider building a comparator for the slow down lights as well. Has anyone installed pyrometers in place or in addition to the thermocouples?

    Hi,
The thermocouple ECU.s are the small epoxy looking rectangular boxes in the trunk(black=original/green=updated). These babies are about $600 a piece and are mounted to the far left and right of the forward wall of the trunk.
The hi tech stuff is way over my head,

I will have a look tomorrow but as far as I don't recall seeing anything else in the trunk other than the 2 motronic ecu's, the 4 relays + fuses and the wiring harness' for the 2 thermocouples. I suspect that when the cat's where emptied they removed the exhaust control units. I can only assume that the po didn't figure on the car being sold where it might have to have an emission test.

Thanks for the pic, I now know that they are definitely not there.

The reason that people do these things is that the catalytic converters have a habit of running hot and restricting performance. (On any car -- not just Ferraris.) A common way of improving performance is to simply hollow the cats out and weld them up -- which allows a car to pass a visual inspection for such equipment if the state, county, city requires.

Still, you're right -- there are the correct ways of going about modifications and the cheap, lazy way. If a PO takes off equipment, they need to keep it all in a box so that a future owner can reinstall if need be.
